I wanted a bit that could put a hole in a thing that did not have a hole when it was purchased. This item put a hole in the item with little effort. I would definitely consider buying an item such as this again if i ever need a different sized hole.

KFDRSD Series Killer Force High-Speed Steel Reduced-Shank Drill Bit 1-5/16"

I bought this bit to cut two 1-5/16" holes through 1/4" thick bronze.

Pros:

- eventually drilled the two holes using this bit after first drilling pilot holes

- shank was true and the cutters were perfectly machined

Cons:

- the “3-Flats Shank” claim is a bad joke. Those “flats” are only 3/4" long and maybe 1/8" wide. ½" drill chucks need 1.5" long flats and 5/8" chucks need flats nearly 1-3/4" long and wider flats for the grip. Consequently, there’s no choice but to tighten the chuck on the round shank.

- since there are only two “flutes”, or cutters, this bit not only doesn’t cut smoothly, it chatters like the devil. I.e., it will shake the daylights out of whatever tool you are using, and the resulting hole develops many ridges on it as it’s being cut due to that shaking. Tried it in a bench drill press and a large floor model drill press [both with the piece held firmly in a cross vise], and a Milwaukee Super Hawg (a huge ½" drill).

- it cut one decent (1-5/16" hole), but the chattering was so violent on the other hole, it wound up being over 1-3/8".

Other:

- due to the severe chattering, the bit would not stay tight in the chuck for more than a minute or so in any of the three tools I tried. On the large floor-model drill press, the chuck actually pulled off the tapered arbor.

Summary:

This was the only 1-5/16" metal cutting bit I could find and it did get the job “done”. However, a better design would have three proper-sized flats and more than two cutters to reduce chatter.

This is a decent bit for the money. If you need to drill hard steel, or will be using it a lot, buy a better bit (Such as Triumph Twist Drill Co. 094148 3/4 Diameter T9FHD - Expect to pay double the price), but if you just need it for light to medium duty once in a while, it will do the trick.

Good quality drill bit. I needed this to drill two holes in my cars lower suspension arms. Of course I started with much smaller drill bits to get the hole close in size, but once I put this guy into my powerful 1/2" drive Hitachi hammer drill, this bit did it's job very well. Nice quick, clean cut. I did oil the bit before use and would recommend doing the same.

I had to drill some holes in 1/8 inch thick stainless steel diamond plate decking in order to install a trailer hitch. This drill cut through the metal like it was butter. I have a half inch shank drill, but needed to drill a much larger hole. The reduced shank is a great feature.

I use this to bore cannons on a 13x40 lathe and I could not be happier. It is still sharp after boring several cannons. I have no idea how other people manage to damage these, considering the fact that I have several of them in different sizes and I have never had a problem boring 1018, 1045, 303 stainless, 360 brass and various other metals. If you are looking for an upgrade for generic Silver and Deming bits, this is it. I wear out bits constantly in the metal shop, but these just keep cutting.

Product arrived quickly and well packaged. However, after 7 holes through 1/2" anodized aluminum it eh bit has already chipped and will not hold center even with a 1/4" pilot hole. I may have gotten a bad bit or something but the "HSS" (High Speed Steel) stamped into it does not hold to the standard of other tools marked likewise.
