I like ice cream. I especially like home-made ice cream, but the old method of using salt and ice and cranking, cranking, cranking got old real quick. A couple of years ago I bought a Cusinart ICE-21 and have loved using it. I wanted to try out this T-fal version to see if it offers any benefits. While it is a capable performer, the ICE-21 is my top choice.

Both work on the same basic principle – they have a double wall aluminum container that has a gel inside. You put the container in the freezer until the gel is frozen solid. The machine has a motorized paddle that mixes the ingredients you put into the frozen container to create ice cream. Very simple to use.

Both turn out a good ice cream. The critical issue is that the aluminum container MUST be frozen solid. If not, the ice cream mix will never get cold enough and you’ll end up making ice cream soup.

Where the ICE-21 pulls ahead is in its overall design. It’s more compact in terms of diameter, which makes it easier to store. It also has a better-designed paddle which mixes better and scrapes the sides of the container better than the T-fal. The build quality of the ICE-21 is also better. While both are made of plastic, the ICE-21 feels more substantial and durable. The motor on the ICE-21 does not seem to labor when the ice cream gets thick, whereas the T-fal strains to stir the mix when it’s thick. Lastly, the ICE-21 also has a larger capacity (1.5 quarts vs 1 quart for the T-fal).

Both are pretty noisy when running, and both needed about the same amount of time to make a batch (roughly 20'ish minutes). Both allow the addition of mixes (nuts, fruit, etc.) easily.

I’ll give this 3 stars since it does an average job, and is certainly worth considering. But, if you’re willing to spend a little bit more, the ICE-21 is a better performer with more power and a better design.

Girlfriend and I got this about a week ago. We've used it four times---one full batch and three half-batches of low-fat frozen yogurt.

I think the bowl must contain a blue ice type of liquid and when you put it in the freezer, it chills. I was skeptical that it would be cold enough to make FroYo, but it works. In fact, each time when we finish a batch, there's a frozen "cup" (conforming to the shape of the bowl) has formed. That has to be chipped out and since you're not supposed to use anything sharp, it's a challenge to remove with a wooden spoon. Of course we could let it thaw, but remember that the bowl needs to be frozen again before use, so letting it warm is counterproductive.

The solution to that problem must be antifreeze. Last night I made key lime with maraschino bits and I added some cherry extract (contains alcohol) in an attempt to lower the freezing point. It helped but didn't eliminate the problem entirely. Of course, you could use something else...maybe Kirsch for that, or a little Kahlua for chocolate, Grand Marnier in your orange creamsicle, etc. (or maybe a neutral vodka if you don't want to alter the flavor). Or I suppose I could try leaving the bowl out of the freezer half an hour before starting?

Essentially it does work but I have a couple quibbles with it, so I'm going 4 stars instead of 5.

1) I haven't been able to find a separate, extra bowl for it. If you only have one bowl, you have to wash it and return it to the freezer, wait. Extra bowls may be available somewhere but I checked the T-Fal website and don't see any. For those with families, it would be nice to have extra(s) available but then, maybe you'd just go to a larger (1.5 qt) unit in the first place.

I've used several different ice cream makers over the years, mostly the traditional type with ice and rock salt, but my parents do own a Cuisinart 2-Quart Ice Cream Maker which I have used several times. As I used the T-fal, I couldn't help but compare it to the Cuisinart machine, which is so far the best ice cream maker I've used.

First off, this ice cream maker makes good ice cream. No complaints there. I made cinnamon ice cream with walnuts and brownie chucks and it came out excellent each time. It took about 20 minutes to get a nice soft serve batch. A few hours in the freezer firmed up the leftovers into regular ice cream. It tasted good both ways.

The problem I have with this maker is the design flaws. The machine is made up of 5 pieces: a base, the freezer bowl, the top part, the stirring paddle, and the motor unit. The bowl snaps into the base easily enough, but it is a little harder to get out, since it is difficult to get the right grip. Then the lid is also kind of difficult to get on and off -- it has three little pins that you slide into slots, then twist. The pins require some finagling to get into place, and then when removing it is hard to grip properly to untwist. None of these difficulties make the machine unusable, they are more of annoyances, especially when compared to the Cuisinart, which simply has a plastic top that you rest on the machine on top of the paddle and requires almost no effort to assemble and disassemble.

Finally, the directions caution that you shouldn't use more than 1.5 cups of custard (because it expands as it freezes), but if you want to add mix ins you have to reduce that amount further.
