Made a three minute video review. These headphones match or beat the quality of $100.00 - $200.00 headphones. At $29.99, these headphones are unbelievable. In my opinion they are built very well, look awesome and though made up of vinyl and plastic parts, seem to be durable enough. Again, the price begs the question, why so many other companies charge so much for their headphones. Overall excellent quality product from Tascam!

If it means anything to anyone, this is the product that has finally prompted me to write my first review. I will be comparing the TH-02 to 3 other full-size headphones that I own, the Audio-Technica ATH-M50S, Phiaton MS400, and Koss ProDJ100.

Build Quality:
These feel lighter and cheaper than the M50's, but upon closer inspection seem very robust. The hinging and folding is achieved with a heavy-duty plastic ball joint. There's not much that can go wrong with it. The size adjustment feels a little cheap, but that's not a big concern as most people will be setting it and forgetting it. If there's something I'm wary of, it's the wire. It is made from a slightly stiffer plastic than I would prefer, but as this is a brand new product who can say how it will weather? One thing that Tascam should address is that the mini-jack needed a good cleaning before I could achieve a good connection. If this isn't addressed they might get a bunch of returns that only need a cleaning.

Comfort/Fit:
These are tied with the ProDJ100's as the least comfortable of the headphones listed above. The pads are stiffer feeling than the ProDJ's but they don't squeeze my head as tight. Getting a good seal was a little difficult for me. The pads weren't thick or soft enough to get a good seal if I actually placed them around my ear. To get a good seal I had to shift the pads forward slightly so that the pads actually rested on the back of my ear. This could be a problem for those with sensitive ears. Like other reviewers stated, if you have a small head these headphones may be too large even at the smallest adjustment. I'm a 6ft guy but I have a pretty small head. I have to use these at the smallest setting.

In my humble opinion, Audio Technica MTH-50 headphones are the best-of-the best. Bar none, they are a huge 10. BUT, the TASCAM TH02-B headphones are a very close 9 in regards to overall sound quality. You might think that these headphones are just not "good enough" because of their super low price, BUT do not let the price fool you. These are quality, well-built headphones and their sound is almost as good as the Audio Technica. So if you like the great sound quality of the Audio Technica headphones but just can't cough up the 100 something plus dollars to buy them, then jump on board with these Tascam TH02-B headphones at a low, low $29.99. You will not be wasting your money. These are also lighter than the Audio Technica because they are almost all plastic whereas the Audio Technica have metal intergrated throughout their headphones. But I like the lighter feel on my head. And the all-plastic build isn't cheaply done.... these are well made. So hmmm... do I spend $149 for a set of quality headphones or do I spend just $29.99 for a fantastic set of headphones? Decisions, Decisions...

I was recently in need of closed headphones and curious about what the market offers. I thought I might share my findings with someone in a similar situation. The Tascam TH-02 turns out to be an excellent value among the eight headphone models that I have compared. Below is my review of these headphones.

I am a speaker builder with measurement equipment, so I know what is neutral and undistorted sound. Unlike speaker systems, most headphones have no crossover or frequency response correction circuit. So, it is critical to be able to know how much such uneven responses affect perception of their sound with respect to accuracy and neutrality. I have good sense of it since I have been measuring sound. But I do not have proper equipment for headphone measurement, mostly importantly a dummy torso/head, nor am I willing to invest time in making a DIY setup. This is the reason why my search and audition have been limited to headphones for which measurement data exist, with some exceptions (see below). I made use of three different sources for the data: InnerFidelity.com, Headphone.com, and en.GoldenEars.net. While there is consistency within each site's measurements, there is also inconsistency between them, due to different measurement conditions and compensation methods. So, I researched and took those into account.

One may say we can use EQ to remedy irregular frequency responses. But EQ has its own limitations. Some minor EQ'ing can help, but headphones that need too extensive correction should be avoided. The foremost reason is the loss of dynamic range. Theoretically, with EQ you can only limit, not increase, dynamic range in a certain frequency band.
