My dog is about 40lbs and has a neck circumference of about 14 inches. That is right on the line between small and medium. The medium didn't work because when I shortened it enough to fit his neck properly the ballast function (the reason I wanted this collar) didn't work anymore.

Here is the sizing:
Small: 11-14 inches
Medium: 14-20 inches
Large: 20-26 inches

My experience is that if you're on the fence with a size (14" or 20"), use the smaller size collar.
Otherwise it is an excellent collar. My experience is that the attachment point is at the top probably 95% of the time and the other 5% is usually because he was napping in a strange position or something.
I love the jingle silencer for the tags, and the buckle is super strong and gives me a lot of confidence.

This collar broke after about 200 yards on the first walk. I purposefully purchased this collar on the basis that it was heavy duty and high quality, it is anything but.

The collar material is the thinnest I've seen in any collar (refer to picture). I immediately noticed this. The whole collar just felt light. I dismissed it, just hoping it was a higher grade of nylon, it was not. The plastic components on the collar are also very thin and lightweight (refer to picture). This is specifically where mine broke. The plastic piece that holds the aluminum clip (the aluminum does not feel solid either) in place stretched and snapped. Upon closer inspection, I also noticed that where the nylon is stitched together is only a single line the width of the nylon. Where compared to my other dogs' collars (Rogz brand) the stitching is a square with a cross on the inside, approximately 6 times the stitching at each attachment point on the Rogz collar.

I would not have been using the collar as main leash attachment point, if the Ruffwear harness had not just broke a few minutes earlier in the same manner. Feel free to see that review for more pictures on the very low quality of Ruffwear items. Seriously, even my no name 5 dollar pet store special collar I was using as a backup is so much better constructed than this. You can NOT rely on this product in any way.

Dog was an 8 month old female mastiff if you are wondering. See attached picture of the offender after the disastrous walk.

I have a 75lb husky shepherd mix. He's very strong and has a strong prey drive. He will pull and this collar holds up, mostly... I see a few review saying it's thin and cheap. The only thing is when you have a leash attached to your dog, the clip that opens it sits against your dogs neck right under his throat. If your dog stands up on two legs and pull away from you and towards whatever your dog wants. The collar might unclip. The two little clips you push in that open the collar causes this. It puts pressure on those two clips when your dog stands up and pushes his neck down. Your dogs throat might have "rolls" between the collar in the front. and the rolls pushes down the clips and bam. Your dog is loose WITHOUT A COLLAR. Thank the lord when this happened my dog snapped out of his "I need to kill this bunny" phase. I yelled "down" and he went right on his belly. My rescue dog does not have a good recall. So that was a scary few seconds when I live near a busy road. So just watch out for that....

The Ruffwear collar is extremely practical and durable. It appealed to me most because of the separate ID tag loop and reflective band. You don't have to worry about the tags interfering with where the leash attaches and in case your dog runs away, he or she will have something reflective on. Even when just walking the dog, the added visibility is good. The collar latch is a bit too large for the small collar, that's my only complaint.

I love ruffwear products, they are all great quality, fun colors, do not fade, have added reflective threads, and look great. The only gripe I have about this, and all my ruffwear collars is the tag attachment system. My Alaskan Husky is always digging, trying to fit through small places, and in general pretty rough on everything, the quick clip ALWAYS breaks, on every collar. It is in no way a problem that has any effect on the collar working or lasting, but I hate replacing tags. I've used a normal key ring to one of the size adjustment metal loops on this which works great, but it would be nice if the quick attachment was made of metal so it wouldn't break.

Amazing product, I purchased this color for my puppy in the hopes of buying a tagg g.p.s. tracker and wanted a collar hefty enough to hold my puppies new tag tracker, his name tag, license tag and microchip tag. It looks more than up for the challenge and to comment on other reviewers claims that it opens and slides I did not notice any slipping on mine and as far as the collar moving around on his neck it really barely moves and he and his sister are at war all day. Love Ruffwear will be buying for my entire dog family.

I ordered this because it came up at the top of the search results for "strong dog collar". When you see and feel this, strong dog collar will not be on the top of your description list. Does not exude confidence that it will hold back a strong German Shepherd. Sorry
