I looked at quite a few other bluetooth speakers out there before finally settling on this righteous thingamajigin.
And Im glad that I did for the reasons to follow.

Durable: I havent dropped it but it has endured all the bumps and shocks that come with riding on the dashboard of a landscaping truck. (those little rubber feet grip quite well!) And in the side pocket of a landscapers cargo pants << Think sweat mixed with ridiculous heat then add bumping up and down.

Battery life: Its great for my uses the thing goes for about 4 days before needing a charge. Though I use it mostly for audible books rather than rocknroll. (It has more life left even then but I like to play it safe) I'd say the up to 15 hr life is truthful.

Sound: Im not an audio expert but the books come out crisp! And loud enough to be heard with two windows down doing 65 on the freeway in a truck that jumps ten feet in the air with every pothole. Even more so when you're pruning/weeding/leaf raking.

Portability: It fits most anywhere and it rides comfortably in a decent sized thigh pocket.

Accessability: I have it paired with my Iphone 4s and I can be about 20ft away and still have steady sound. Also it can easily be paused, the volume adjusted, played etc. quickly. Which is very important if you dont want to annoy the boss!

The charging feature is a nice plus but I havent used it extensively... Yet.

The best speaker I've ever owned. Sound is great, interface is great, easy to use, remembers all your bluetooth devices, and the battery lasts for ages! Also, the battery can me used to charge up your cell phone, mp3 player, or anything else that takes power from a usb port. I ran my Raspberry Pi (a small computer) off this!!!
I use it at the beach all the tie and just rinse the sand off when I get home! I use it while in the shower and don't worry about getting it wet when I cange songs or volume as the controlls on the speaker are waterproof and can control my phone over the bluetooth connection.
You need to get this speaker and forget about the Jambox or other speakers.

I use this speaker on my ATV for some background music/speaker phone for mobile phone and it works great. The main reason I came to write this review is to praise the build quality. I left this speaker on the back of my rzr for the entire winter. It was subject to ice, snow, lots of rain and weather extremes. I found it the other day and it turned right on. It still had mud all over it from my previous atv trip as well. The battery was still 80% charged and paired up with my new iphone. I've still not charged it after using the entire day yesterday in my back yard. I'm impressed and shocked it still performs as if it were new. Another feature I really like is that you can charge it with a micro usb cable as well as charge your phone with the built in USB port. Buy this speaker. You won't regret it.

The build quality of this speaker is quite nice. It is well sealed. Clean tooling lines. Nice metal finish on the grill. Behind that are 2 speakers and a down facing passive radiator on the bottom.

--Controls and Inputs--
The buttons on top are rubber. They are easy to access but a bit stiff. You don't really feel when the buttons are depressed. You end up really mashing down to make sure you hit the button. The Bluetooth pairing button is on the top of the device. I accidentally hit it several times which cause some mis-connections with my phone. Would have preferred it in the back since it doesn't get used much. When you power on the speaker it plays a short tone - sort of like the THX sound in theaters. It was cool the first time but kind of annoying in subsequent power cycles.

AUX port and power connections are in the back hidden behind a screw off plastic cap. It only take about a 3/4 turn to remove the cap which is nice. However there is no lanyard holding it to the body so its easy to misplace. There is a battery power button and several LED's which light up to show the reserve. I would prefer this option on the exterior of the unit rather than behind the screw cap. Battery level is one of those things you check a lot on a portable speaker, especially one that charges your phone.

--Sound--
I have previously owned a Spar Zephyr 500 which was made by the same company before they changed the brand to Braven. That speaker was generally bad sounding so I was hopeful there was an improvement in this next generation product. The start up tone was actually deep with lots of bass - uncommon is this size speaker. Sadly it was not as impressive with most of my music. I got the Photive Hydra, Braven BRV-X, Braven BRV-1, Soundbot SB571, Anker Bluetooth Speaker and the Ecogear's Ecoxbt to make a side-by-side comparison and here is my relatively audiophillic opinion.

The Photive Hydra is amongst loudest (comparable even to the bigger and more expensive EcoBT and the BRV-X). It is water resistant and has good build quality. It is really clear, has a great bass (prominent lows and mids) and a mic too. Plus, it's inexpensive. I ended up choosing this speaker because it was the best sounding, loud, water proof speaker. The on/off switch is under the twist-cap which is minor annoyance.

Anker - This speaker looks great, has excellent battery life and probably the best sound quality of this lot. Great mids, decent highs but it's bass is average compared to some of the other speakers listed here; In a blind sound test this would win compared to all the others in sound quality.
It isn't water resistant though. It's loud enough for a room but may not do great out doors. If you want the best quality speaker, this is it. This one is inexpensive too!

The Braven BRV-1 has prominent highs and decent mids and bass. It has a better water-resistance IP rating than the Photive Hydra. While it may have marginally better sound quality than the Photive (depends on what you're listening to) it's quite a bit softer.

The Braven BRV-X has good sound quality but seems to be less loud than the Photive and only slightly louder than the other speakers here. It has better battery life but is also a lot bigger and heavier than the others; plus it's about 4 times the price of the Photive Hydra. I was hoping this would be awesome but, in my opinion, is not worth the money compared to these other waterproof speakers.Read more ›
