Style Name: DUET-IOS-MAC
I started with a $250 audio interface believing I needed 4 inputs. The unit worked well enough but the included software was dated and the instructions were incredibly tedious. Then I went to a $400 model, still believing I "needed" 4 inputs (stereo guitar in inputs 1/2 and stereo synth/keyboard in lines 3/4). The included software was better but the manual was over 100 pages (100 pages for a digital audio interface??).

After purchasing two mid-level audio interfaces I decided I would trade 4 inputs for just 2 if it meant I could have easy-to-use equipment and software that nearly guaranteed the highest quality. I decided to purchase the "Apple-equivalent" company and splurged for the Apogee. When I say Apple-equivalent I mean the following: 1. simple & intuitive interface, software, and manual. 2. high-quality 3. sleek design.

I'm using a 2.4GHz Intel MacBook Pro (Late 2012) running LogicPro X. I plugged in the Apogee Duet and Logic recognized the Duet immediately. I spent the next 10 minutes figuring out the correct/desired settings within the Apogee Software using the help of other users after Googling "Apogee and Logic" etc. Within 20 minutes of opening the Apogee Box I was up and recording in stereo.

Now, after using the product for nearly a month, I'm pleased with my decision. Sure, this interface is nearly 2-3 times the price of others BUT I (the novice) immediately noticed the sound quality in my recordings between this and my previous, less-expensive interfaces. Recordings felt richer, thicker, and with greater depth. I doubt I will use all the features of the Duet, but I'm pleased to know I've got the best-sounding portable device without the additional complications. DAW's and home-recording is complicated enough -- you don't want to spend hours upon hours WASTED on a component designed to simply get your recordings into the DAW.

When I began in Pro Audio back in the 80's...I never imagined that someday I would be recording on something called an iPad or my Phone...!

but...when I heard the recordings I have made with a DUET on my iPad... using good to great microphones, from an SM-58 to a Neumann U87 (yes theres phantom power!)....I was completely amazed...I still can't believe this is happening...I have used many many converters over the years...nothing compares to Apogee... The stereo Mic Pre alone is worth more than the cost...and I use them over many of the $2K plus pre's I have in my rack... I wish there were 7 stars!
THANKS APOGEE

The Duet is awesome. It is a little big, but the sound quality is amazing. If you are looking for a way to improve sound quality to your headphones or speakers in a portable device, this is it! The versatility of the Duet is what sets it apart. You can connect your guitar, microphone, computer, or other devices and listen to the true quality of the sound.

Great sound capture with lots of volume, The meters are really nice and maestro has worked without a flaw, Easy to work with on Ipad as well. Don't buy it because of midi, it's just a USB port you might as well plug your midi into your computer.

While the packaging is nice, when I finally got this thing connected to my iPad Air with a guitar plugged in, the sound was horrible. Just really terrible. I am returning it to the place I purchased it to see if they can help me troubleshoot it, but I cannot find helpful information on the Apogee website about how to adjust the settings so that it sounds okay. It certainly doesn't sound like the "best in the industry" as many claim. This is with a PRS Custom 22 plugged in. Also, the 2nd 1/4" input on the breakout box does not work. Did not try the XLR connectors since the sound was so bad from my guitar. Fortunately, the store I purchased it from has a 14 day return policy.

EDITED: After I posted this review, I discovered that an audio track that I recorded on my iPad Air using the Duet (for iPad/Mac) didn't sound as horrible on "tape" as it had sounded when I recorded it. So I think that its just a matter of configuration of the audio. The sound quality is good I think. A friend suggested that the 96khz setting may be too much for the iPad to handle... so hopefully I can get it configured correctly so what I play sounds good.

EDITED A SECOND TIME: I took my Duet back to where I bought it, and the woman who sold it to me helped me troubleshoot the issue. What it turned out to be is the cable that connects my headphones to the Duet. I was using one with 4 bands on the plug, which indicates (something) that you can use it with a microphone and the next/repeat/back buttons for controlling your iPad's sound playing software. In any case, when we swapped the cable to a standard 3.5mm cable without the microphone et al, it worked great. I was able to hear what I was playing, and it sounded superb.

So I am re-editing this review to include that information in hopes that it helps someone else struggling with the same issue.

I will say that Apogee's tech support was VERY responsive and helpful, too.

I got this because I had wanted to switch my microphone to the Shure SM7b which needs a higher gain interface than the one I had previously used (Scarlett 2i2). I did a lot of research and decided upon the Apogee Duet. The first duet was defective. It had this hum when I plugged the mic into the first breakout cable. I called Apogee for tech support and while they helped me to understand how Maestro works (which is totally confusing and there isn't a whole lot of content with detailed instructions as to what each setting means or does), they never took care of the hum.

I was never given the opportunity to test record while I had the tech support rep on the phone. He did help me with Maestro and setting up monitoring in my DAW (Adobe Audition). It wasn't until after I hung up, when I realized the hum was still there. I called Apogee back and was on hold for a half hour. The lady who answered the phone said there were only 2 people in tech support which is baffling to me. I emailed Apogee because I was late for work and couldn't keep holding. It took their tech support 2 days to get back to me saying that we had resolved the issue when I called and claimed it was Adobe Audition causing the hum which seemed ridiculous to me. It didn't really seem like Apogee wanted to accept responsibility that their product was defective. Well, it was and fortunately Sweetwater did accept responsibility.

I figured out that it was the breakaway cables when I realized the hum was not present when the mic was plugged into the second XLR cable. Fortunately, Sweetwater who I bought it from was great and sent me another one which they tested first.

When this thing works, it's amazing. Such a clear sound which is why I gave it 4 stars in spite of the problems I had.
