My 11 year old is very fussy but he loved these boots and gives them 5 stars for comfort too!
Fit great, she found them to be very comfortable from day one.

Product Description

They won't be climbing the Himalayas just yet, but the Hi-Tec Nepal Waterproof Jr. boot will get them through plenty of discoveries and adventures. This kids' outdoor shoe features a waterproof suede and performance fabric upper with a breathable mesh lining and lace entry for a secure fit; rustproof hardware ensures durability, while waterproof construction keeps those tootsies protected from the elements. The unique Big-Fit insole system consists of two insoles; remove the lower (black) insole to create a half size larger which adds room for growing feet while at the same time, giving your pocket book a break for a few more months. An abrasion-resistant toe bumper adds extra protection; the Multi-Directional Traction (MDT) carbon rubber outsole provides reliable traction to the Hi-Tec Nepal Waterproof Jr. hiking boot.

We purchased this pair of boots, and 2 different "air balance" (sub-$30) boots prior to BSA summer camp. I was hesitant with the price point (sub-$55) because he's still growing, but went for it anyway. The price difference was more than justified.

I say this with all the conviction a parent and avid scouter can say: best product purchase ever!

When my 1st year scout put them on he was immediately impressed with the great feel (as compared to the air balance products). He's VERY picky about his feet and how they feel in shoes. He was dancing around in these moments after lacing them up and delaring loudly that we'd found his boots for camp. They were broken in with in a few days (I think he slept in them one night)

    Observations:
    - Well constructed (good seam lines, well glued, interior doesn't have rough edges, etc.)
    - Light weight and durable
    - Foot bed is solid enough for a great hiking boot, but not so rigid as to be uncomfortable for an active scout
    - As advertised: Waterproof! This product feature was field tested in the NE Ohio summer where it rained for 2 days at camp, which left ample puddles, mud holes, and fields of wet grass for scouts to walk through. His feet stayed dry the whole time (while his tent-mate was left to suffer with prune feet and a bag full of soaking socks)
    - And an added bonus - the insole (which is soft, making for a comfy foot after a long hike) is removable to reveal a second (though not removable) insole (called their "big fit" system). This basically increased the life-span of the boot for a growing child whose feet will change size before the end of the summer. By Fall camps we expect to pull the insole and change the size 6 into a 6.25.

The reason I'm giving it one star rating is because my son wore them for two months and the sole literally started peeling off from the top front of the boot where the rubber of the sole starts. Very disappointed with this brand, I am not buying Hi-Tec in the future.

Bought these for my son, age 12, to wear at camp. He's a 4.5M, so I bought a 4.5M. He said they were too small, so I gave them to my 10 year old son who is a 3.5M and they fit him perfectly (with a little room to grow). So, I bought a 5.5M for my 12 year old and they fit great with room to grow--especially with the extra removable liner. He wore them for 4 days straight at camp, walking pretty much all day long. He said they were comfortable and kept his feet warm and dry. My youngest has worn his several times and likes them, too. Would definitely recommend!

We got this for my son for Christmas. His first hiking boot. At first, he wasn't very excited about it, but after I got him to put it on for a size test, he suddenly got enthusiastic. He wore it around the house and then out when we made some gift deliveries. We bought it two sizes larger than his normal shoe, which I think is the right decision. He'll have a little room to grow and we can put a double sock on him if necessary. We'll update this as we get some trail time on it. We like that it has waterproof construction and a grippy rubber sole. In our frequently wet conditions, a rubber sole will be less slippery than the polyurethane soles you sometimes find on kids shoes.

July 2014 update: My son has now used these boots on several Cub Scout activities and it has become his favorite shoe. He even wore it everyday to school, despite me trying to get him to wear other shoes. He loves them. I prefer he not wear them out on pavement, but he insists on wearing them. He wore them on a rather muddy hike last weekend, but despite being mud covered and going through some puddles, they stayed dry on the inside. Of course, I scrubbed the mud off and he wore them to school the next day. We'll have to get another pair of these!

Fit fine, but after wearing it for a few month the front of the boot on one is separating. The glue apparently only lasts a short time. Back to LL bean boots for the kids, they last longer than how fast the kids outgrow them, unlike these.

Bought these for our blue-loving 5-year old who has sensory issues and hates the big giant snow boots. These have worked great for all of us, with the small exception that he can't tie his shoes so that we have to help, but that's not a big deal since he's trying every day and we can see that they're helping him learn to tie. He has average feet, and these fit perfectly, and he loves them. Not clunky, don't make his feet too hot, and look nice.

Got these for my son on Christmas, we went on our first hike yesterday and I kept asking how his feet were doing. After an hour of hiking in the Florida Trail, not one complaint about his feet, and we all know how how 9 year olds can be! His first big hike was a success and I know that he is ready for more!

Got these boots for my 5 year old grandson to "go fishing" with his dad. The minute he opened the package he had to try them on. Once he had them on, he was still wearing them when I left. I would see him stick his foot out, look at the boots and then stomp away...so proud, so proud. Great quality and cute, cute cute!!!
