I love this shoe, but there are some manufacturing problems (the eyelet came off day one, and the sole is pulling off from the upper) that I don't normally associate with Vivobarefoot, hence only 4 stars.

    (UPDATE)
I wear almost exclusively VivoBarefoot or other "barefoot" shoes. Normally, they are very well made, but these particular shoes just aren't. The first day, one of the eyelets fell off, and within a week the sole started to come off from the upper. I tried re-attaching it with shoe-goo (hence the mess), but it didn't help at all.

If you are debating this shoe or the hiking boot (the Tracker): go hiking boot. I got those at the same time, and they are MUCH better made. They run slightly smaller (I'd get a 46 if you normally wear 45), but they are just better.

Also, aesthetically, for some reason the rear sole sticks out in a way that I associate with cheaper shoes.

I am a big fan of the barefoot movement. I've run in vibram 5fs for years and was excited when Vevo came out with a line of shoes. I bought a pair years ago that looked like clown shoes, but proudly told people they were barefoot shoes. However, what has always made me upset with Vevo is the the utter shoddiness of the shoe construction. For a shoe that's in the mid $100 range, the utter lack of workmanship is apparent almost immediately (a week? two weeks?). Those shoes fell apart quickly.

Years later, enter this boot! For a trip to Machu Picchu, I thought I'd give Vevo a try again, because I much prefer the feel of barefoot shoes to normal shoes. Since I was going to Peru in the rainy season, I needed a waterproof boot and thought I'd found the perfect solution. They were actually fine as walking boots, but waterproof these were not. Well, it depends on your broad definition of "waterproof"... Anyway, this time I found that not only had Vevo shoddily built this shoe, but it had poorly designed it. The large grommets on this shoe let water in. They let water in! They are large holes. After getting wet feet in New York before I even went to Peru, I applied waterproofing to this shoe -- in denial that I had been a sucker to Vevo again. Next, I've had these shoes for two months and, like my other Vevos, the sole wants to come off the shoe. Either not enough glue is used or the soles aren't bound to the shoe properly, or the material that's used to bind the sole to the shoe is too cheap. I don't know. Anyway, my sole is coming off and that definitely contributes to water getting into the shoe. New York just had a big snow storm and guess who's feet got wet.

So ultimately, these are bad shoes, but I still wear them everyday because I don't see another company making barefoot boots or dress shoes. Other companies ... please try. There is a devoted market to barefoot shoes.

I switched to vivobarefoot / minimalist footwear 2 years ago and have never looked bock. I like the Ra's for summer, but these have become my go to shoe in winter. I have a very thick midfoot and these took some break in time, like 2 weeks to loosen up to being a comfortable snug. Still tight to get on. Plenty warm as long as you keep them dry, I would say comfortable down to 20F. I just found some nice waterproof insulated snow overshoes(NEOS) and they fit well with these boots. The combination is lighter than my regular snow boots and way more comfortable to walk in.

The pair I received, the soles are stitched like with Gobis. So the issue of the soles becoming unglued should not be a problem. Compared to a Gobi, the front is shallower, not as high, but just as broad/wide (for me). Like it.

Update, insulation works but the outlast insulated insoles aren't that good when its sub zero, I replaced them with toasty feet aerogel insoles and i could walk thru snow without my feet freezing (and with winter socks.)

    UPDATE 2:

Amazon customer service is amazing, will help me where the manufacturer has dropped the ball

    UPDATE Dec 2014:

Took these out to wear again this season only to find a large hole in the heel of the left sole and a very similar one developing in the same place on the right
Perhaps I wore them ~4-5 days/week for 4 months, never walking much more than 2 miles a day or so in them in normal city conditions (nothing that would stress them)
The soles have just worn through and they now leak

I can't remember this ever happening to any shoes I've owned before

I have many other pair of Vivo shoes, most older than these boots, none have this problem. I think it's specific to the way this boot is made

I've contacted Vivo customer service to see what they can do but $180 for a boot that lasts one season isn't a good deal

    Original review:
Great zero drop winter boots, wore all last winter and kept my feet dry through all conditions

The insulating insole seems to work well but on really cold days these boots weren't warm enough, mostly because of the thinness of the sole/insole

The plus side of the sole's thinness is great groundfeel, esp for a winter boot

I've had these for about two weeks, so I'll update after midwest winter hits big a few months. So far, so good; they've been great. I work in a lab all day, and these shoes are very comfortable. Great for colder weather, but not very breathable for wearing inside on long, 12 hour + shifts. Definitely happy to have these when it's raining. I've waxed several times when I first got them to protect them, and they don't show scuffs too bad. I have a lot of Airwair wax from my old Doc Martens that I've used with good success. I really hope these shoes last as long as my Doc Martens.
