The initial growl on this thing is something to hear -- absolutely terrifying! He goes on after that snarl to a vicious bark. You wouldn't want someone to open the door and let this "dog" loose on you. I've actually caught myself yelling at him to make things more authentic ("Shut up, Frank! It's just the neighbors!") I added Beware Of The Dog signs to both sides of our fence. If people are walking out of range but within visible distance (in the bike lane across the street, for instance) you can wave your hand in front of the unit (keeping yourself out of sight while doing this, of course) and trigger the bark so they're aware that your home is guarded. All of this contributes to the realism. If your neighborhood is suddenly full of people who don't seem to belong, and burglaries are up, this item is probably a great idea. I wish they'd include a couple of remote motion sensors so that Frank could guard more areas on the property. Maybe they'll develop more accessories later on.

4-11-15 I had to edit this review and drop to just one star, after less than 2 years it failed. It would start arming and disarming randomly, until it finally stopped working at all. That's not a very long life span for something like this!!

The barking (using the 2 dog setting) is extremely realistic. But, I set this right against the front wall of the house, just a couple feet from the front door where it wouldn't be visible through the door and angled to point directly at the front steps. And it doesn't detect movement outside until you are right in front of the front door...most of the time. Sometimes not even then, you'd have to actually break in the front door to set it off.

I added an extension cord and put it in front of the glass panel beside the front door and it'll start picking up motion about 4 feet in front of the front door...the problem there of course is that it is visible through the glass, particularly the red glowing light. So it's pretty obvious that it's an alarm rather than real dogs. Maybe I'll try setting a cardboard box over top of it and see if it'll still work.

Since the earlier Rex Plus (version 1) is supposed to have a 30 foot detection distance, I was expecting something similar from Rex II. Very disappointing.

OVERVIEW:
This is the much better looking/stylish and more `advanced' version of STI's popular electronic watchdog.
The STI Rex Plus II ED-55 now has MORE features and offers a more versatile way to deter intruders and/or receive visitor chime alerts, or trigger a siren upon motion detection.
Rex Plus II claims to sense motion through thick doors, walls (not brick!) or glass.
When motion is detected within the units range, the device sounds one of 8 selectable alerts, including a very angry barking watchdog. Rex II reportedly detects movement up to 26 of unrestricted feet away ('adjustable') within a supposed 150 degrees.
Upon detection (sometimes seemingly without), the device will begin to produce the alert you have chosen. The closer an intruder gets, the more frequent the dog barking. Rex II can also be easily muted with a gentle pat on the "head."

THREE ALERT CATEGORIES:
1. DOGS: (3 options) - Dog 1, Dog 2 and Two dogs together.
2. GREETINGS: (3 options) - "Ding", "Ding Dong", and a "Chirp" sound.
3. ALARM: (2 options) - Siren 1 and Siren 2.

VOICE MESSAGES/PROMPTS:
1. "Warming up" - when power is applied.
2. "Armed" - after warm up cycle is complete.
3. "Growl sound" - when unit is muted (for dog sounds only).
4. "Armed" - when coming out of mute.
5. "Please replace batteries" - at power up or after mute button is pressed.

This is the "new and improved" Rex alarm. It has 2 different dog sounds and one 2-dog sound. It has other sounds that I don't really find useful like a siren, a chirping sound, and a doorbell. It also has a mute button which is really nice. It mutes the alarm for 15 minutes. I read that the earlier version of this product had issues with motion detection from the back and sides of the unit. This one also has this problem, but the range on the back and sides seems much more limited than from the front and I found a place to put it that works without me accidentally setting it off. The sensitivity knob doesn't seem to do much. Volume is loud enough even though I have a glass door in front of my wooden door. It also has no problem detecting motion through both doors, although even with the sensitivity at max, you have to be pretty close to the door for it to alarm.

It loses one star for the back/side motion detection, and for the sensitivity knob. Otherwise this is a great product. I feel safer knowing Rex is guarding the house while I'm away.
