The BIG BOSS OIL-LESS FRYER is a countertop oven that cooks with convection currents, infrared heat, and a halogen lamp. When I ordered it, I expected (somewhat naively) to receive an appliance that would substitute for a deep-fat fryer. Unfortunately, although the "fryer" will cook French fries and breaded onion rings, the fries and rings don't come out tasting like traditional deep-fat-fried foods. But your house will still smell like you've been frying!

This appliance cooks large food items pretty well, which is its one good feature. However, for me it has a lot of negative features (which are described in more detail at the end of this review). Chiefly, the fryer (1) is huge, (2) uses about the same amount of electricity as my newish oven, (3) doesn't cook any faster than my oven, (4) handles only small batches of vegetables and fries, (5) uses racks and trays that foods stick to, (6) undercooks food when the recipes are followed, and (7) doesn't always cook food all the way through (even when the food is arranged in a single layer). Add to that, the fryer glows so brightly that at first it made me very uncomfortable, as a psychological thing, to stand anywhere close to it in my small kitchen. The halogen light cycles on an off during cooking, but not when cooking times are very short.

I tested the fryer by cooking French fries, onion rings, crescent roll cinnamon buns, and a 15 lb. turkey (15.31 lbs., to be exact), always following the directions in the included recipe book. FRENCH FRIES: The capacity of the tall rack and mesh tray is 1-1/2 potatoes cut into quarter-inch strips and arranged in a single layer; the batch takes 12 minutes to cook. I've been using the Oil-less fryer for a few months now, and it is hands-down my favorite kitchen appliance. I'm on a fairly restricted nutrition plan and eat TONS of boneless skinless chicken breasts. Broiling or baking turns chicken breasts into nasty little hockey pucks very quickly, and I could never quite figure out how to fully cook the chicken without drying it out. The Oil-less fryer makes it easy: I pop the chicken in, set the timer for 15-20 minutes, and get chicken that (really is) crispy and browned on the outside and moist on the inside. It's awesome. I've only been able to achieve comparable texture with my steamer, but the steamer takes much longer and doesn't cook the chicken as thoroughly. I've also "fried" potatoes and sweet potatoes with very good results.

As you can tell, I'm a huge fan of this oven, and I hope it keeps working for a long time! Some brief caveats, though:

As other reviews have said, it's not very big. You probably won't be able to cook for more than 2 people at once.
The mesh basket is difficult to clean by hand (as recommended by the manual). I've been tossing it in the dishwasher with good results.
Contrary to its claims, it does emit a bit of heat... but it's a fraction of the heat emitted by my steamer.

Great product: Manufacturers customer service sucks.

Great product! It can cook anything. From chicken to a cake. It is a simple convection oven using a halogen bulb for the heat source.
Update:
I still love this thing! I have made meatballs, meatloaf, chickens, steak, roast, vegetables, homemade french fries and lots more.
The photo is of 10 large chicken breasts that I cooked in 20 minutes.
Update: in the beginning of December the halogen light burned out. I contacted the manufacturer. On December 10, they took my information and said they would send out a replacement and I could return the other one in the box. Called back on December 21st, they said my return had not been processed and They should be sending it out into or three days. I called back on January 5, and they said I had to return the top first then they would send me a new unit. Parentheses yes this makes sense, but they never mentioned it).
So I still like the fryer and I sent the top back via UPS and we'll see how things go.
I really really really really miss this thing.

The problem with my free standing kitchen stove's electric oven is that its broiler isn't worth a tinker's damn.

Before we got our Big Boss, the only way my spouse and I could get a decently grilled steak, (we like ours medium rare), was to go out to a restaurant. Even then, the results were uneven. What we paid in some of those places would easily have covered most of our weekly grocery bill and the quality, more often than not, left something to be desired. Some of those steaks were actually tough enough to resole a pair of shoes and the cooking wasn't better than what we weren't enjoying at home.

In my humble opinion, a major part of the problem with most of the negative opinions of the Big Boss expressed here are that the purchaser's expectations were unrealistic. With that said, I'll admit that at least some of the blame for their expections lies with the manufacturer/marketer. Because, no matter what they claim, the Big Boss is not an adequate subsitute for either a deep fryer or a regular baking oven. And, as it name implies, it is big and cumbersome to handle.

In other words, the Big Boss, beginning, middle and end, is a GRILL (!!!), and, in my opinion, an excellent one at that.

As I have learned to do, in my 75 years as a consumer, is to carefully study and plan when it comes to this kind of purchase. First of all, we had to decide exactly what we wanted as well as why, and it's amazing how many people don't do that. We are a two person household which, for medical reasons, is restricted to a low-fat, low sodium diet.

What we wanted was to be able to properly grill meat and fish at home with as little muss and fuss as possible, period.Read more ›
