I'm going to get technical about this drop.

First of all, this is a specialized type of artificial tear. It's meant for use for those people who have MGD otherwise known as meibomian gland dysfunction.

Our tears have 3 components, a mucin layer that helps keep the tears on our cornea, an aqueous watery layer that makes a bulk of the tear and a small lipid (oil) layer on top to help prevent evaporation of the underlying aqueous layer (think of it like how oil floats above water helping prevent evaporation). Meibomian glands are little glands embedded near our eyelid margins that secrete this oil tear.

Therefore if we have MGD, we do not properly secrete out a good lipid tear film and our tears evaporate very quickly from our eyes regardless of whether we produce enough watery component. This tear is specifically designed to help this deficiency. However if you have an aqueous (water) deficiency, then this would not help as much as some of the other types of drops out there because other drops are typically meant to act as a substitute lubricant (aqueous layer).

Translation: If your eye doctor has diagnosed you with meibomian gland dysfunction or having a poor lipid layer, definitely give these drops a try. Go with a different type of artificial tear if not.

I felt like I had an irritating "foreign body" (as my optometrist called it) in my left eye and no matter what I did, I found no relief. I bought a glass eye-wash cup to rinse out my eye ... rinsing my eye using this cup gave me temporary relief for maybe 20 minutes or so and then it started up again. Before this I used Visine, which made no impact whatsoever. I continued using it since I had it and it was already paid for, but, it didn't resolve the sensation of having a foreign body in my eye or the burning/itching sensations. Then, I would rub my eye until it teared up and subsequently my poor eye would simply continue to burn, itch, and, feel as though something was still rubbing directly against my eye, except, it hurt much more than before.

Well, I saw my optometrist this past Friday for my annual exam and told him what I was experiencing. He gave me two samples, one being Systane Balance Restorative Formula, and, told me that this is what he preferred for his own personal use. He also informed me that Systane had about five (more or less) different formulas and that this particular one -- Balance -- was the best one for my dry-eye situation. I don't wear contacts and have not had any type of eye surgery; so, I'm guessing that this is what he meant when he instructed me to choose the Balance Restorative Formula if I opted to use Systane for dry-eye relief. Furthermore, my wonderful optometrist explained to me to use it three times a day. He told me not to wait until I feel like I have a foreign body irritating my eye -- as it would then be too late to address the matter. He explained that I should approach my dry-eye condition as a preventative/maintenance regimen -- not reactive, which I haven't read in any reviews (unless I completely missed it) or its printed directions.

I have had Lasik induced dry eye syndrome for about 5 years now. I have tried just about every eye drop on the market since then. I have bought ones that cost $2 and others that cost $40. These new drops are possibly the best I've ever used. For me, I have found that using eye drops as little as possible is the best way to go. If you are using them 20 times a day, you are probably doing more harm than good. I only use these 1-4 times a day and I think they do a good job without any blurring or irritation. Not a miracle cure for dry eye, but still my favorite eye drop so far.

My eye doctor diagnosed me with dry eye and prescribed Systane eyedrops.
I had been using Systane Ultra High Performance but saw these here on Amazon and thought I'd try them out. I ended up buying them at Walmart and tried them out right away.
First off there was no dramatic difference between the Balance Restorative drops and the Ultra High Performance. The only difference I noticed was the Restorative drops soaked up in my eyes almost right away, whereas the others would always run down my eyes if I didn't keep my lids closed. I liked that aspect.
My eyes have clouded over and my vision became slightly white when administering them. It was kind of freaky but then I realized it was due to the drops being white. Ha!
Tonight I tried one drop of each kind in each eye. The High Performance (in my right), once again, leaked a little out of my eye (which is an occurring annoyance) but the Restorative (in my left) soaked in, like I said.
But as I sat here on my computer, the right eye stayed considerably moist while the left felt dry as usual and I had to continue to blink.
After a while both eyes feel the same.
I will continue to test it out.

I have the condition for which these drops were developed - meibomian gland dysfunction. I have been taking prescription antiinflammatory eye drops for several years, and they only do so much to help the dry eyes, irritation, and general "gunky" feeling. I can't use those drops with contact lenses, so wearing lenses can be very uncomfortable. My ophthalmologist had run out of suggestions. I was doing a little research recently to see if there were any new developments regarding this condition, and I saw something in a peer-reviewed medical journal about Systane Balance, so I decided to give it a try. I have seen a marked improvement after a week of using these drops.

First off, you should know that these drops are a milky white substance, so after you have put the drops in your eyes, you will look like you are oozing something disgusting. Just saying you should blot the excess quickly. Your vision will not be impaired, but you'll notice a light-colored film for a minute or two. You can use these drops as often as you need to, so there's no concern about overuse or dependency. My eyes feel better immediately after using these drops, and the effect usually lasts for a few hours.

I wear one contact lens. The package insert says that use of Systane Balance is not recommended with contacts, because the drops can discolor the lenses. I wear daily disposables, so this is not an issue for me. However, I will say that the eye with the contact lens feels a little different from the other eye when I insert the drops - sort of like the contact has become a bit sticky. This is a very brief effect. One huge difference I have noticed since using these drops is that I can wear my lens for longer periods of time.
