I have a unique perspective on this company - first of all I own a construction company and reside in a town close to where Hills is actually located. Our company was contracted for the installation and fabrication of certain structural items in the plant. We had a first-hand look at the meticulous procedures and dedication of this company to its facility as it was constructed. Hills has illustrated through its stringent policies for CONTRACTORS working in their facility a commitment to the health and safety of their food. I was not a consumer of Hills' products until just recently. I feel good about giving their food to my two kittens and puppy. I have purchased both the "healthy development" and "ideal balance" kitten food and the difference between the two (other than the obvious ingredients) is the "ideal balance" has smaller kibbles. I prefer the "ideal balance" for this reason. My kittens love this food - I have them on self-feed schedule - so I do not know exactly how much they eat. I have one Bengal and one Ragdoll. Also - the description doesn't mention this that I could see - but the bags on the "ideal balance" kitten food have a really cool "Velcro-style" closure. The bag opens and seals shut extremely well with this system and eliminates the need for a storage container if you are concerned about keeping the food fresh. Love love love this product!!!! I will definitely continue to feed my kittens the "ideal balance" brand when they switch to the adult cat food.

I have a cat who is always hungry but has such a sensitive digestive system that it's easy to for him to throw up.

My main problems are:

1. If he likes the food, it's generally not very good quality food and he ends up barfing.
2. If it's good quality food, he doesn't like it very much, and he so doesn't eat enough and is always hungry and complaining about it.

This food is of a good enough quality that it doesn't make my cat barf, AND he likes it and is eating it right up. I started with several sample bags and have moved on to big bags. My cat hasn't vomited once since he started on this food.

This is a great find and I recommend it for cats with sensitive digestion. Try some samples or a small bag first and see if it works for you, because of course every cat is different.

I had thought that when my sweet CRF kitty Mary-Kate gave up the ghost the special needs cat food reviews would end with her. Alas, the kitty whose picture called to my family from the pet finder page is also a special needs kitty who needs special needs food. AND he will not eat prescription diets. Well-played from beyond the grave, Mary-Kate. Touché, my little feral ghost.

Mary-Kate, who had CRF, liked this food and tolerated it well, so I had continued to feed it to her son, our surviving kitty, Commander Fluffypants. When the Glitch in the Matrix came to stay with us, he seemed to like the food. He has cancer and is with our family for as long as he has left. My husband thinks I am nuts, but that's another story. ANyway, when I took the Glitch back to his cancer surgeon for a pre-adoption/post surgery check up, she ran a blood glucose test that came back at over 400.

Whoops.

She prescribed insulin shots - which he is pretty sweet about - and DM food, which he has politely refused to eat. He loves this stuff, but it apparently doesn't love him.

Final verdict on this food? Good for kitty with CRF. Good for kitty who has urinary tract issues. NOT good for diabetic kitty. Sincs carbs aren't that great for cats anyway, I'm taking one star away from this otherwise tasty and decent quality dry cat food.

Two great things we notice when we switch to this food for our kitty:
1. His coat looks much better. He's now shinny, and he almost does not shed.
2. His litter box is not intolerably smelly anymore.
And he loves it. He's a 6-month old, 7 pound kitty now, so we feed him 1/4 cup x 2 times a day. It looks like that's the right amount for him. For cat owners who worry about the lack of diversity in cat food: you don't have to change his food all the time. Vary the treat flavor, give him yogurt, give him chicken broth (with no onion)... We use this food as our basic food for our kitty, and he's happy with it.

Some notes:
- We switch from Science diet, which was not too bad, but this is clearly better.
- Amazon has the 6lb size bag, which will last us 2 months. The only store in town carries this food is 20 minutes away, and they only have 3lb bags, and they close at 8pm, and we are lazy :). So we order this from amazon, have it shipped to home every 2 months.

Our Siamese isn't a picky eater, but he's always had some "digestive issues", as in: he loves his food, but sometimes it doesn't love him.

Because of that, we decided to try cat food with more natural ingredients, and since we've always used Hill's Science Diet products, we switched to this Ideal Balance version.

The first thing we liked was that it contain NO corn, wheat, or soy, and NO artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. When you open the bag, you can actually smell the freshness of the food, and it isn't a bad smell.

Speaking of opening the bag, the design of this bag is great! It has a velcro "Pres-LOK" (tm) strip that makes re-sealing the bag a cinch.

Second, we were impressed with the ingredient list which has fresh chicken as the #1 ingredient, and brown rice as the #2 ingredient. The food also contains veggies, cranberries, flaxseed, and eggs, for a powerful dose of quality nutrition.

We transitioned our cat to this food over the course of just a couple of days, and he did not experience any stomach upset AT ALL.

Just as important, he comes running to his food bowl, and seems to love the taste of this stuff! :>) We feel good about having made this switch to a food with natural and nutritious ingredients.
