This stuff didn't work for us, but I'm giving it 3 stars anyway because frontline and advantix didn't work on our fleas, either. We saw about the same results from this stuff as we did from the 2 chemical filled ones (a few dead fleas and a little improvement, then a return of fleas within about a week).
The smell of the Clove oil is a bit overwhelming for about 12 hours but it fades rapidly after that. My husband LOVED the smell while I thought it was a bit nauseating. The dogs didn't seem to care one way or the other. It made my silky haired Dachshund mix look oily for a few days while my rougher coated Lab mix seemed to just soak it up with no problem.
Anyway, it didn't work well for us but we had super fleas that were immune to everything. Btw, for anyone going through what we did, here's what finally worked for us:
1) Beneficial nematodes sprayed all over the yard. Google it to learn about them, they eat the fleas!
2) Flea combing the dogs and then vacuuming the house throughly every other day for a few weeks.
3) Bathing the dogs in regular dog shampoo once per week, allowing the soap to sit on them for 3-5 mins then rinsing well.
4) A few drops of lavender oil in water sprayed on the dogs really does seem to repel as well as anything else!

Good luck all! Definitely try this stuff out, but don't expect miracles if you have super fleas like we do!

I used this product on my 48lb Pit bull. A couple days after using it I noticed he became lethargic and was sensitive to touch. Then, he got an open sore, so I took him to the vet. The vet started to shave him (see photo) and he had burns all down his back, along the track of where the Sentry Natural Defense was applied. Never will use this again!!! After reading about it online, I now see a lot of similar reviews of this product. Had to post something, do not want another dog to have to suffer like mine is right now.

One of my pets is highly allergic to the toxic chemicals found in other flea and tick products such as Advantix etc. I thought I would give Sentry Natural Defense a try. I was delighted as it did not cause an allergic reaction. The smell is potent but it does dissipate after a few days. I've used this product for 4 years and my pets have never had a flea or tick while using the product. I will continue to purchase this item.

I had a dog that had a severe reaction to a traditional flea collar. I vowed I would never put chemicals on him again. I found this product in my local Wal Mart store and started using it about 5 years ago. Wal Mart stopped carrying the product, so I went to the local pet store. It was much more expensive. I was happy to find the product on Amazon for a very reasonable price. I like the product a lot. It has a pleasant spicy scent. If you have indoor dogs, you will notice the scent more than if your dogs are outdoor dogs. At fist, my dogs didn't like the scent and tried to rub it off but over time they have come to accept the scent and don't resist. The product is very easy to apply and lasts up to 30 days. I have found the product to be effective where I live. My dogs never have fleas. I do have to pick some ticks off once in awhile but we live in a rural, heavily infested area. I also sometimes forget to reapply the product after my dogs swim, so the ticks may be the result of the fact that the product has been diluted by the water. The directions recommend reapplication after water exposure. I would recommend this product to all dog owners; especially those who are concerned about the amount of chemicals their dogs are exposed to. It has worked well for me and my dogs. I am very satisfied with the product. An added benefit is that those with children and grandchildren can apply the product without concern that the children will be exposed to harmful chemicals.

I really hate to rate this as a flea and tic repellent because my dog has never had a flea problem to cure. I like to use some type of "flea juice" to prevent problems though.

I don't like using the standard pesticide types because my dog gets a bad reaction to them so I am always looking for something new and better, and safer. So I thought I'd try this. Time will tell.

Don't believe some reviews that say this stuff stinks or smells bad. Pesticides smell bad. This stuff is made from oil of peppermint, cinnamon, cloves, thyme, and vanilla. It is a bit pungent! Your dog will smell like a pastry shop or a box of Christmas cookies for a few days.

I've used this product for many years. We live in a remote area, lots of deer and other wildlife. The product is a tad smelly the first few days, but not objectionable. Seems to keep the ticks and fleas off my German shepherds. I prefer not to use poisons.

My Bulldog has the most sensitive skin in the world. He welts up when a flea bites him. I've been using standard flea treatments on him, and he welts up even more after being treated, which makes an entirely new condition to treat. Up until now, I have been able to find a flea treatment that doesn't irritate his skin AND also eliminates fleas.

I have tried all of the name brand and generic "chemical" treatments, to no avail. At my wits end, I finally broke down and ordered the "Natural Defense." 80% of his welts were gone the day after I treated him. The fleas are almost non-existent, and it really helps with that Bulldog "odor" he gets due to his allergies. I actually kind of like the smell. Some reviewers said it smells like cloves. It smells more like vanilla to me. I'm so happy with the results that I just placed another order, just in case there isn't any left on Amazon when we run out.
