I am fortunate to have been privy to the music of Field Report for years. Most of these songs are old friends, toughened and emboldened from performance to performance, sure of themselves and ready for scrutiny as well as a drink. Some I've watched through their awkward teen years, as they found their sea legs and grew into themselves; wallflowers taking root to take over the room with their bloom. I have even been present at the birth of a few, beaming like a proud uncle at their potential and promise. They all share something in common, something that gives them their magic, their heart. It is what drew me to this band, into their music, and has keep me an ever-faithful listener. It is their Sincerity.

On the stage, this Sincerity is unabashedly displayed under the hot lights. There, the songs revel in their organic nature, refusing to be defined or predicted. They live and breathe as the band works as one organism to convey all the complexities and passions to give each note its proper respect and place in the moment. No performance is the same, no moment repeated or cheapened. The core that drives it all are the lyrics. They are the hidden treasures revealed as each word is delivered, each syllable wrung out more than you would think possible. These words are stretched over music of muscle and bone, giving them physicality which embodies the spirit of their triumphs and tragedies. You can't help but feel like you are being let into something personal, something far more than just a song. It is as if the protagonists in these songs are making their confessions directly to you, and the band the conduit. And as they exorcise their angels and demons, releasing their fates to the skies, you feel yourself pulled along.

How can you capture this on record?

I heard Field Report on David Dye's World Cafe and thought it was worth purchasing. I have not been disappointed. This is a beautiful group of songs. I particularly liked "The Year of the Get You Alone" and "I Am Not Waiting Anymore". There is not a bad song on the entire mp3.

Anyone with an ounce of musical nous would be well advised to check out the music blog of Denver music aficionado Heather Browne aka "I am fuel you are friends" for regular wondrous treats (you may also wish to tip a nod to the excellent Amazon UK Reviewer "The Wolf" for first class honours talent spotting and a lovely review on that site). Field Report are a bunch of musicians who recently performed a Chapel Session on Heather's Blog. This is where musicians are called on an impromptu basis to perform freely distributed sessions of their albums material. Field Report recently graced said Chapel Sessions with their presence and performed three songs from their wonderful debut plus an impassioned Neil Young cover "Borrowed tune" which left this reviewer pondering the immediate purchase of their debut album. After shelling out for the record the mystery deepens why Field Report are not a beloved musical institution since this is one of the finest albums of 2012. Bless them Uncut have just caught up and reviewed the album in their excellent August 2013 edition and lauding it with an 8 out of 10. They have also given a free track of the band on their monthly give-away CD the sumptuous "Taking back Alcatraz" a narrative about Native American activist Richard Oakes and his famous occupation of Alcatraz Island. "If I die / At least I made a choice," sings the bands leader Chris Porterfield

Field Report's claim to fame is that they are the least known "third band" to come out of Eau Claire, Wisconsin's DeYarmond Edison after Bon Iver and Megafaun, The formers inspirational leader Justin Vernon produces this debut which on balance is actually better than his own self titled sophomore album in terms of understated beauty.

can't wait for field report to have another cd come out. Saw these guys in Cedar Rapids (never heard of them before) but after that I was hooked. Such mellow sounds and I love that the songs are long and you can really get into what they're saying!

An easy way to gauge an album's worth is simply how often does it get listened to after the first play. This debute stands up to that test easily, getting almost continuous play on my S3 the first few weeks after release, and having been found so refreshing after a break.

I was fortunate enough to catch them at Eddie's Attic when they passed through Atlanta, and I can tell you the band is tight. The few YouTube videos don't do justice to the current state of of synergy and craftsmanship. And without a doubt each Field Report song is masterfully crafted.

Softer music for the most part, not quite rock, not quite country, not quite folk. Fantastic lyrics, vocal harmonies, interesting subject matter. Enough Wisconsin references to know where home is. My current favorites are: Incommunicado, Fergus Falls, and Chico the American. Fans of Pinetop Seven, Great Lakes Swimmers, and maybe Red House Painters....should find this compelling material.

After 2012 has come and gone, and some albums are filed away and a few remain atop the stereo cabinet or in the car, awaiting the next play, I find this one frequently at the top. This is a listeners album and a thinker's album.
It's not rave music, it's not dance music, it's not background music. It's the sort of album you put on and sit down with a scotch on the rocks on the sofa and just listen to.
Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the opening song, Fergus Falls, which sounds a little quartet-like, but beyond that, the album gets deeper and richer.
I don't mind admitting one bit that I had to get out a dictionary to look up a few words here or there, but the terms used were not a gratuitous use of high register English, they actually made the poetry better.

I bought 3 copies and gave 2 as gifts at the Mann concert, where they opened, and I dare say, somewhat showed her up. When I approached the band and asked if they would sign 3 copies if I bought them, they seemed confused. "Well, I could buy one and burn it, but I don't steal music." They smiled and passed each copy around.
