My only regret--- that I didn't invent this myself! I LOVE this and now recommend it to my students. In my specific situation, my violin is rather unique in that there is next to no 'lip' left around the bottom curve of the instrument--- the age of the instrument, or whatever, has resulted in the wood of the ribs kind of expanding past the normal margins. So, that leaves almost nothing for a traditional shoulder rest to clamp onto, and shoulder rests ALWAYS CONSTANTLY fall off. What a relief to find this! It's just so cool to stick this on there and play! It's as comfortable as my normal kun/Everest/Mach one (I haven't used my wolf for quite awhile) ---(I'm a shoulder rest junkie)-- and the instrument does sound good, too--- not enough maybe to quantify it, but it's simply awesome that this rest works so well. Also, now in my double case of both my violin and viola, I no longer have to carry TWO shoulder rests (with my viola, I have used a Bon musica rest--- wonderful, but big)--- since I can use this for both! STREAMLINED! And this fits in the case, over the neck of either instrument, so I don't need an external bag for it, and at less than $30, this is something that EVERY violinist and violist should definitely try!

I'm going to review this very positively because I think it needs a couple more stars. I've only been using this AcoustaGrip for a few days, but for me, now, at this stage of my playing it is perfect in every way. I used shoulder rests for about 35 years (my collection is as complete as most dealers'), only stopping to go without about 5 years ago because the way firm rests lock the angle of the fiddle no longer works for me. I did play restless for the first 35 years of my violin playing - starting 76 years ago (last week). For me now, playing with the AcaustaGrip is definitely better than playing without.

I think there is some improvement in tone (especially on the upper G string - at least for me on the one violin I've tried it on). But I definitely noticed a definite tonal improvement on my piano quartet (where I'm the cellist) partner's (fine Italian early 20th century) violin starting 2 weeks ago. He had put on his new AcoustaGrip pad for the first time - and I can't think of anything else that might account for the tonal change. It was the same the following week. (He and I have been playing chamber music weekly for 13 years.)

5 stars from me.

Be patient with the process of adaptation. It takes a whileThe result will be not only improved comfort and decreased weight but a dramatic improvement in resonance and timber. Think about it. Would you put wood clamps (shoulder rests) on an instrument a delicate and beautiful. Yet in effect, you are using a modified wood clamp on your violin. uuuggh!

As far as cost vs value - this invention should actually cost more given its real benefits to comfort and sound. The AcoustaGrip is very durable and long lasting. Should the grip decrease, a little soap and water to the surface will restore it to new.

I saw a few very negative reviews here and I think were motivated by a demand for immediate gratification. So go slow as the Grip may get a little time for adaptation. You will be freed from you wood clamps forever.

Perhaps expected too much from this. Was wanting to replace a Kun Bravo that tends to slip off the violin at times. This shoulder rest stays on the violin fine (after minimal use for a month). The one downfall compared to Kun, and other rests similar to the Kun, is that its height is not adjustable. If the thickness of the rest is appropriate for you, great! If not, so sad, too bad. For me, personally, this rest is a touch too thick, making me want to go back to the Kun most of the time.

Great idea though!

THIS IS A FABULOUS SHOULDER REST! I've tried everything else on the five violas I own and everything else falls off, including the Bon Musica which was the best choice until I found this. I am a retired professional, but still playing hours a day and in many groups. I can't have a shoulder rest that falls off in the middle of a performance! I've had this product for a couple of months and it has not fallen off any of my violas, not even the slippery German carbon fiber instrument I own. You have to work with it a little to find the right position. This will vary according to how you are accustomed to holding your instrument, but once you have found the right spot....wow! I bought two of them, one to use every day and one to have as a back up. So far it it holding great and is just like new. Make sure your instrument is clean and after use be sure to put it on the card which is supplied with the shoulder rest. No matter what anyone says, it does improve the sound of the instrument, especially the a and the c strings were improved on ALL of my violas, not just a little, but considerably. Again, I can't praise this product enough....THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!
