First of all, don't buy it. It isn't worth your money broken and cracked shells, I'm furious. If it wasn't $12 to send them back I would return them but that means losing $12. Over half of them look like they are painted in clear nail polish. (Clear paint is the same as colored paint). This is toxic to crabs if chipped and eaten. A few of them have so many spikes and are so heavy and long there's no way they can even fit into their huts or climb, other are so thin it's like they are made of plastic, and will break easy.
P.S-go to Walmart, go to the floral section to make fake flower arrangements...and near the vases, you'll find different sizes of bagged shells. You're better off with those, no joke. I hope this review saved you $20 because it's not worth it.

These really are beautiful shells. None were chipped, and none of them look fake or painted. They look like someone picked them up from a beach. If you're worried they won't be big enough, I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed. They are definitely for the larger crabs. So overall I'm happy with the quality.

Although, it's been a week or more since I added them to the crabitat, they still haven't tried them on for size. Maybe they just aren't ready yet..I dunno. The big one keeps looking at them and turning them over, but hasn't decided to make any of them his new home. His current shell is too small too, but if he doesn't pick one in the next few weeks, I may have to try other ones. I'm not sure what the deal is. I'll update if these don't work for us. But they look great.

I ordered this "large" pack of shells for my large sized crabs and although the package came quickly the shells I got were marked "medium." As I had also ordered a package of medium sized shells I did not imediately notice the mistake, until the second package arrived also sized medium. My crabs are shell fighting, I sure wish the shells I'd actually gotten had been the size I'd ordered!

Otherwise the shells are nice and are not broken, there are several different types available with different style openings. I'm sure if they were actually large sized my crabs would have been happy. Three stars because I think others might want to know that just because you order large doesn't mean that's what you will get.

EDIT five minutes after writing this review a package of large shells arrived at the door. I do not know if the mistake was realized and a second package was shipped or if the first package was entirely an accident. However, the Large shells are nice. One was broken and one appears to be coated in a clear gloss paint (there are drips of the paint where it is obvious). The two shell fighting crabs looked at each shell and then went to opposite ends of the aquarium. Neither switched shells. I can't explain where the extra pack of shells came from, but, I did eventually recieve the package of large shells so I bumped the stars from 3 to 4.

First reason this pack gets 2 stars is the the packing is non-existent. My package came with a few chipped and cracked shells.

Next reason is that in the reviews I read on these, they were said to be non-painted. One of the thinner shells, some sort of land snail shell, had very obviously been painted clear. That is he LAST thing I want flaking off and my crabs ingesting.

Lastly, these are fine for some medium sized crabs, but if you have large crabs who need depth to their shells as well as ~1" opening, they may not work. 2 of my crabs would not be able to fit in any of these.

Also, 1/2 of the shells had long skinny openings, which not all crabs prefer.

Luck of the draw, crummy packaging, and what appears to be paint to make shells look "pretty". Great for decorating, not so much for your pets.

Ordered these shells for my son's hermit crabs. Wasn't really sure what I should expect as this is our first time owning hermit crabs. : )
The shells arrived quickly and were packaged very well (not a single one broken or even chipped)
There was a nice assortment of shells!
We selected a few from the 12 and placed them in the crabitat....one crab has already found his new shell and the other crab is still enjoying trying each of them on!

These shells worked great for our hermit crabs. At the pet store they only seemed to have medium sized shells which were too small or the xtra large shells which were ridiculously big for our crabs. These were perfect, there were 3-4 that were suitable right away and the rest were ready for when the crabs are a bit bigger. The largest shell was about twice the size of the smallest one in the pack and everything else ranged in between which was perfect for growing hermit crabs.

I don't think I will be needing any shells for a long time, but I would buy here again.

So based on these reviews and the ones for Small Animal Supplies Hermit Crab Shell - Medium (12Pc Bulk Bag), I bought the medium shells first. I must have underestimated what a “big” hermit crab is, because none of the medium shells were bigger than the shells my hermies were already in. I bought them at PetCo and all the hermit crabs there were all about the same size, so they must all be large. The medium shells look about the right size for those hermies I’ve seen in souvenir stores at the beach.

Anywho, the large shells are perfect! The size varies a little, which is great because one of my hermies is slightly smaller than the other. One or two of the shells had openings that are a little too oval I think, but they were all natural and, most importantly, unbroken. I picked four, two for each hermie, and placed them in the crabitat in the morning. About lunch time my husband called me to tell me that our smaller hermie, Mr. Krabs, had chosen a new shell already. Sweet! The bigger one, Bubba, has been molting, so we’ll see what he thinks of the shells once he’s done.

Great purchase!
