All my ears needed was to hear that very first Poodles song and I was hooked. From "Metal Will Stand" to "Performocracy" I have loved every song on every release. Jakob's fantastic vocals have never disappointed, and he has always shown so much range. From the softest song to an explosive rock n roll metal scream, he is the man! And Christian's thunderous drums matched with Pontus' perfect bass rhythms has always provided the driving force. As for guitar, I really hated to see Pontus Norgren leave (Hammerfall's gain), but Henrik is a great addition to the band. And on "Tour De Force" Henrik really stands out. He has brought a sharp edged guitar sound to the band. These guys have always had a winning combination, and this release is more proof of that. And as always, not even a hint of a filler or anything less than a great song. Poodles fans will love it, and for newcomers to the band...but, listen, rock out, enjoy!

And the bonus song "En För Alla, Alla För En" (One For All, All For One) is fantastic. The song is the official theme song for the Swedish Hockey Team for the 2013 World Championship of Ice Hockey performed by The Poodles.

Never heard of this group! Took a chance and bought it. I have been blown away by every aspect of this cd. Excellent vocals and the guitar playing is great. Where has this group been? I have been listening to hard rock/metal for over 30 years. This is a really good hard rock cd.

The Poodles - Tour De Force
Written by The Rock Man

I must admit that when this CD slid across my desk I really had no idea what to expect. I had heard of The Poodles, a four piece band from Sweden, but had never heard any of their albums. The band was formed in 2006 and entered the Melodifestivalen of that year. The Melodifestivalen is Sweden's annual music competition that determines which acts will represent the country in the Eurovision Song Contest. On this occasion The Poodles would finish in fourth place, however this was enough to attract the attention of German record label AFM and in May of 2006 the band released their first album Metal Will Stand Tall.

The band, that features Jakob Samuel on vocals, Christian Lundqvist on drums, Pontus Egberg on bass and Henrik Bergqvist would go on to release Sweet Trade (2007), Clash Of The Elements (2009) and Performocracy (2011). In 2013 the band unleash their next audio assault, appropriately titled Tour De Force. This is the band's fifth album and is a firecracker of a listen.

The album kicks off with Misery Loves Company which has a killer opening riff and is a high energy track. Up next is Shut Up! with its very catchy and commercial sounding chorus, this song is a very early 1990s style track, Viva Democracy, Going Down, Kings & Fools and 40 Days And 40 Nights have some serious attitude that can more than match it with their American counterparts. Leaving The Past To Pass is a beautifully sung ballad with violin undertones that blend nicely with Henrik Bergqvist's guitar playing. Miracle sounds very much like Europe, of recent years, while Godspell, Now Is The Time and Only Just Begun bring home the album very strongly.

I've been with the Poodles since day one and have increasingly loved each and every new release until now. Tour de Force was a disappointment at many levels. Even though the same group of fellows handled the mixing, the tone on the album seems muffled, at the lower end anyway. Don't believe me? Check out Edberg's bass tone on 'I Rule the Night' from Clash of the Elements or his great tone on the Tainted Nation project. Also the annoying little hissy "Sss" at the end of hard consonants is still present in the vocals - you know the sound - like when we used to play cassettes meant for dolby noise reduction on decks that didn't have the feature. Having said that, the disc opens with a great track Misery Loves Company (except for the tone... too bad); track 2 is such a throw back to Motley and VHalen that I just don't get it! I expect "rips" from WigWam but not from The Poodles, Shut Up also seems to me like a follow up to Action from Performocracy; Track 3 is good but then we run smack up against another "rip" from Marilyn Manson - whether it's The Dope Show or Beautiful People I'm not sure, never the less it's a "rip" and also the first of TOO MANY bleeding heart humanitarian songs (more later on that); tracks 5,6,7 plod along and are ok; track 8, Kings and Fools?... just don't like it, the parts struggle to blend, the time changes are awkward and It reminds of me of Sergeant Pepper in a way; track 9 is another humanitarian effort, as well as track 11 (horrible bass tone again too), and track 12; track 13 is almost my favorite track on the whole darn CD and I can't even understand the words!!Read more ›
