I ordered two of the Tru Temp Refrigerator/Freezer Thermometers so that I can keep an eye on the temperature of a new Garage Fridge/Freezer that we recently purchased. I went in expecting that these types of thermometers would not be the most accurate products for the low price of around $5-6 each and I didn't need them to be perfect.

The first thing I noticed when I opened up the box was that the two thermometers were different by close to 4 degrees, so immediately I was expecting the worst. I put them into the fridge right next to eachother on the same shelf and let them cool off for a while. Over the next several days, I would regularly check the thermometers and what I found was a lot of variation. The temperatures would be up and down constantly. This is to be expected with a garage fridge that has to work pretty hard to keep everything cool in the higher garage temperatures. What did concern me the most is that the two thermometers were almost always 6-8 degrees different from eachother, one of which would regularly jump above the safe fridge temperature. To me, this means at least one of them does not work, and possibly both and I had no idea what the real temperature of my fridge actually was. I didn't bother to do the ice bath test because I pretty quickly decided that I was going to return them. Instead I decided to test them against another brand of thermometer before they went back.

What I did was order three of the Taylor 5924 Models to compare. I received them and immediately saw that they were virtually the same temperature coming out of the box. I put all three on the same shelf in the fridge next to the Tru Temps. The Taylor thermometers were consistently the same temperature across all of them.

I purchased two of these thermometers from Target a few years back and really liked them. Target stopped carrying them so I turned to the best shopping site ever to get a few more. The two new thermometers were exactly the same as the previous two from Target so I was very happy about that. I made sure the ones from Amazon weren't cheap fakes or rejects by placing them side by side with the Targets and they were spot on, no variance in temp.

I have a garage fridge that gets a bit testy in the cold Minnesota winters so I cannot use the freezer section for about four to five months out of the year. The other seven or eight months we use it to store frozen treats and ice cream so it is critical to know when it's time to yank stuff out before it melts and spills everywhere. These thermometers do the job perfectly.

The remaining two thermometers are in my house fridge and give me a constant update on temp. Throughout the year it is necessary to adjust cooling settings both in the house and garage fridges so these make that job a snap. Neither of my fridges are fancy so turning the cooling knob from three to four doesn't tell me a thing but all the guesswork is gone now.

Lastly the most important and helpful part of these thermometers is the color coding. The temperature danger zone is clearly marked and makes it very easy to just glance and know you are safe. The words REF are visible in the pink section on the thermometer so you know immediately if there is a problem or not. As a restaurant manager for four years I understand the importance of proper food temperature. I would not chance my families health especially knowing I could have easily spent five or six bucks to help prevent a food borne illness. If you've ever had one you know what I mean.

Most people don't think much about the actual temperatures in their refrigerators, unless it is one of the premium types that has a thermometer built in. You NEED to monitor your temps! It's the only way to ensure that it is providing the right temperatures, otherwise, it's guess work.

The other Taylor thermometer (5924) was a tad too big at 3 inches, so I went with this one with a 2 inch dial, and this also has a dark blue freeze section on the dial bar unlike the other one, which makes it slightly easier to read. Generally, consumer thermometers are inaccurate. I would expect them to be around 5 degrees off. After the ice-water test (don't dip them in water, use a zip lock bag), the 3 units I have varied at -1, -2, and -3 degrees off. Acceptable performance at this price range. They're not expensive, so there's no reason you shouldn't have one in your fridge.

I had a problem with our freezer and wanted to get thermometers to confirm that all was working right.

These fit the bill and were price right.

They have color coded areas on the face that show the proper temps and make it very easy to visually confirm temps whenever you open the door.

This thermometer is one of the best I have ever seen and at about five bucks an excellent value for the money.

It has a well-marked and easy to read analog dial. I tend to prefer analog dials to digital readouts because they show the temperature in relation to the whole scale and you can "see" where the temperature is rather than be forced to "think" about what a number actually represents. And to my mind this makes analog dials more intuitive to use.

This thermometer also shows the correct and safe temperature ranges for a refrigerator and freezer, 32 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit and -20 to 0 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively. Thus these well-marked ranges help to teach users what the safe and correct temperatures for food safety for refrigerators and freezers should be.

Although this thermometer (model number 3507) is called Trutemp, it is actually made and sold by Taylor Precision Products, a reputable name in the industry. Best of all, it has received certification from the National Sanitation Foundation, an additional assurance of safety.

You can see the NSF certified listing for this thermometer at the NSF's website.

I bought it to replace a cheaply made, worn, "no name brand" thermometer. Compared to my old thermometer, the Trutemp thermometer felt hefty when I took it out of the package and felt more solid in my hand.

I am very satisfied with this thermometer. I highly recommend it.
