Some of the many Show Boat recordings are theatrical and some very
untheatrical. Some are better sung and some less well sung. This one
is extremely untheatrical yet very well sung. It may be the best
sung Show Boat ever. Shirley Bassey's two numbers do contain some
wrong notes and even wrong words, but she's probably the biggest
star singer to appear as Julie on a Show Boat album. The two romantic
singers, Don McKay and Marlys Watters, are really something. They
came to London to play the leads in West Side Story, and it's
interesting that McKay sounds exactly like Larry Kert, who
originated McKay's role in the show on Broadway. Watters is more
operatic than Carol Lawrence, who originated Maria in West Side,
but there's still a feeling that Show Boat has been taken over by
the new Broadway of Hal Prince and Stephen Sondheim. In all, this
is a really lovely Show Boat, just not a theatrical one.

Not exactly an "Original Cast Recording"! It's the "London Studio Cast", whatever that means. Pretty fine singers, but....
"Old Man River" was done by Inia Te Wiata, apparently a Maori. He's a fine singer, but he just doesn't have the American Southern Negro accent that the song calls for down right. The rest of the songs that are there are pretty good, quite professional.

EMI's 1959 potted studio SHOW BOAT, all 11 tracks of it, did yeoman service for nearly three decades despite stiff competition from Sony's more idiomatic, livelier and homegrown 1962 studio recreation with Cook, Raitt, Warfield and Allers. The disadvantages here are "modern" (and very inauthentic) orchestral charts, an anemic chorus and decent but unexciting singers. With one exception: the young and already very stellar Shirley Bassey delivering two (2) of tragic Julie's torch arias. They're both showstoppers, but not at Varese's price unless you covet the great cover art, Bassey channeling Dorothy Dandridge.

I like the cover art and so will you. However, these 11 tracks (including Bassey's two) remain available much more affordably in the Classics for Pleasure rerelease, which also includes brief snippets from Kern's badly neglected MUSIC IN THE AIR and a longer, fairly chic, synopsis of ROBERTA, again by Anglo studio casts recorded 1959-61.
