I also have a Fluke non-contact probe. It works flawlessly. This Amprobe reliably indicates the presence of voltage, but it also goes off frequently when there is no voltage present. I can just walk across a floor and it goes offer several times. It might be static electricity setting it off, because it also sounds when I rub it on my shirt. The Fluke unit doesn't do that. I got this free for purchasing another product from Amprobe, and after using it I definitely would not buy one. I returned an IR thermometer to Amprobe for warranty service last summer and it took 6 weeks and lots of phone calls and emails to get it replaced. Funny thing is, Fluke and Amprobe belong to the same company (Danaher), and it was actually Fluke handling the warranty issue. I've always had great experiences with Fluke. Maybe the Amprobe products get a lower priority due to their price. The point is that it might be a defective unit but I'm not going to bother to return it under warranty to find out.

Looks like it wasn't properly glued at the factory. Superglue fixed it. It is so sensitive that it matters what side of the wire you are testing. Neutral side of a common 2 wire lamp cord does not excite the unit. moving it 1/4" to the hot wire makes it beep. sensitive but just have to test both conductors.

Much too sensitive for most uses. This tester may be useful for detecting line voltage, but it is useless for determining if a particular wire in a box or panel board is live if other live wires are present. When I first tried this unit out I had a Kindle Fire plugged into a charger and a totally disconnected USB cable lying on top of it on my desk, with one loose end being a foot away from the Kindle. The Amprobe gave an indication of live voltage when within 2 inches of the loose end of the disconnected USB cable. It also sounded when within 4-8" of any live wire and on the metal chassis of various pieces of electronic equipment even when far from any actual wiring. For my work, I need to tell which particular wire is hot in a box, not just that there are live wires in the general vicinity. I had an Amprobe VP-600 that I was very happy with, but someone walked with it. I bought the 1000 as a replacement because my distributor did not have the 600 in stock. This is going back. I will replace it with another VP-600 or try a Fluke 1AC.

As a follow-up, at the insistence of one of my counter people, I ended up replacing the VP-1000 with a Greenlee GT-12a and am happy with it. The Greenlee was much less expensive than the Fluke. They're going to speak to the Amprobe rep, as they've gotten quite a few returns on the VP-1000

It doesn't even deserve one star. This tester is going back. Just setting on the table it goes off. The only use I can see for this tester is duct taping it to my dogs collar so I know where he is. Save your money and buy a VP-600SB, if you can find one.

Not good for professional use, this probe is too sensitive and will even go off if you are walking with it in your pocket. I would overall say it's a waste to purchase the item.
