I rated this magnifier fair only because it does not illuminate that well at all. The magnification part of it is VG and having it slide in it's own case prevents scratching. But, illumination leaves a lot to be desired.

It was advertised as having an aspheric lens but it clearly does not, the edges are distorted. The battery holder pops up and prevents the lens from being retracted back into the case which is kind of irritating.

I have had several different styles of magnifiers, not just for home use but also at work, and since I bought my first Carson magnifier I won't buy anything else. I like how it not only has the hard plastic case the lense slides into, but it also locks in place. The case is very slim and the corners are rounded so it won't tear your pockets. Another minor feature that I think is better than most lighted magnifiers is that not only is there a sliding cover for the batteries, but there is also another piece inside that locks in place over the batteries so they cannot fall out even if the cover is somehow knocked off. A lot of reviews talk about the light being too dim- you're only trying to light the area you are reading, not light your way down a wooded trail back to base camp, and the LED light on this magnifier is more than bright enough to read any food label or road map.
