To all guitarists, or anyone using a signal processing app----JUST BUY ONE AND BE DONE WITH IT!

I'm using iOS Amplitube as my mobile "ideas at the speed of thought" device. I think that's a quote from director Robert Rodriguez by the way, but the point is this app is my go-to studio for recording, playing, and working out ideas as they come for songs on my guitar. Of course, it's not a replacement for a professional studio, but I'm continually amazed at what it can do. It's one of the VERY FEW apps I have any real use for.

That said, the interface is critical between instrument and device. This first iRig interface was (is) pretty noisy. The same for the AmpKit by Peavey. This product, though not 100% perfect, is nonetheless a 100% improvement over the first generation interfaces. In my opinon, this is not just a novelty item, and can be used for true productivity.

The product description says it all. It is an all encompassing interface for instruments, both 1/4" and XLR input, as well as MIDI in. It also offers phantom power to condenser mics, and the interface is connected to the iOS device by the 13 pin connector, and/or the new lighting connector. But, it also has the ability for standard USB connection to a Mac computer.

All cabling for your iOS device connectivity is supplied minus your instrument/mic cable. From get go you can plug in your guitar, synth, or mic and start playing a minute or two after opening the box. I've used the iRig Pro for Amplitube, and Garage Band, using guitars, mics, and a portable, cheap toy like MIDI capable keyboard. All have been not only usable, but much more EXPANDABLE because I can now make fairly decent demo tracks with fairly professional results in more ways than one.

You get the quality of the iRig Pro plus the ability to plug in Lo-Z mics AND use phantom power if needed AND it does MIDI. You get all the cables needed to connect to a computer as well as all versions of the iPad and iPhone. You also get some free software when you register and not the limited functionality free versions. The unit is well made and a no-brainer to use.

I already had the iRig HD, but was looking for something that would let me MIDI a keyboard to use the keyboard apps in my iPad. This works perfectly. It's very portable.

I have been using this to capture the sound of my acoustic-electric guitar, so I can't, at this point, make any statement on how the iRig works with a microphone or a Midi signal. I hope to be able to add that at a later point in time.

It is important to understand what the iRig does (and does not) do. The key feature is an analog-to-digital converter that captures an analog sound signal (guitar, banjo, bass, microphone, or any other instrument capable of generating an analog output) and turns it into a digital signal that can be accepted by an iPhone or iPad. To turn that signal into a recording requires an App that does that.

This is where the iRig Pro is a let down. The free app (AmpliTube) that IK Multimedia provides are not very useful. For example, they don't allow recording a "clean" signal. You can get a nice distorted electric guitar sound, but if you want to record without distortion, you'll have to purchase add ons. I found that out after receiving my iRig and I was quite disappointed. I had expected the free software (at least after the "unlocks premium content") to provide a basic, unaltered recording option. It does not. You can use GarageBand with the iRig, which is free in its basic configuration. But you may find it isn't a very good solution either.

In the end, I went with the software from a different developer to record music. Using that, the iRig performs very well. The 1 star deduction is for the fact that this item by itself will not let you do what you'd expect it to do, but you won't know that until you buy it.

One curious observation. Leaving the iRig plugged into my iPad over night somehow resulted in the iPad shutting off power to the Lighting connector. To get the iRig working again, I had to reboot the iPad.

I needed a solution for recording vocals and guitar tracks onto my iPad. The iRig pro delivered without any problems. Setup was easy and the incoming signals were almost noise free. Very cool. My concern is that the construction seems a little flimsy. I have to really pull to get the microphone to unplug from the device and I worry that the gain control may not last. For the price and for what it does, it's a good deal. I haven't found a solution that works for both mics and guitars with phantom power too. I would have loved it if IK Multimedia made this device in metal with solid connections instead of plastic.
Ah well. I will baby it as long as I can but I don't think it will stand up to rugged use.

The original iRig is garbage, in my opinion. There was so much noise that it was unusable in a realistic scenario. I think IK Multimedia recognized the issues, because the iRig PRO is a 100% improvement. There is no noise to speak of. There is a rubbery coating on it, and a compartment for a 9v battery to provide phantom power for an XLR microphone. The output is shockingly crisp and clear.

This little piece of hardware has replaced my aging M-Audio Mobilepre. While that was a good piece of hardware, you can't get any more portable than the iRig. It's also very versatile in that you can use this to hook up anything with a 1/4 inch plug, an XLR mic, or a MIDI device, and on the other end we get USB, 30-pin and Lightning connectors. If you use an iThing for ANY kind of recording, you'll love this.
