You can always count on me to pick up a new Midnight Syndicate CD. I've been a huge fan ever since hearing their stuff at a local haunted house. They make the perfect mix of mood and atmosphere, but every track has something unique about it so it's not just 60 minutes of dreary music. They got variety, which a lot of spooky music CDs lack.

As far as how Monsters of Legend stacks up to the rest of their discography, I think it's excellent. There are some real home-runners here and the whole CD blends together smoothly. You can definitely trace the inspiration from classic film scores of old school horror flicks. It's very atmospheric. Very different from Carnival Arcane where every track seems to have a specific goal, a new tent to explore. Monsters of Legend takes you on a full-length journey through classic fears.

OVERALL: For Halloween atmosphere, you can pick up any Midnight Syndicate CD and have the perfect soundtrack. Their stuff is scary, but not gross or demonic. Some of those sound effect CDs or people-screaming albums are just embarrassing. For old-fashioned, spooky fun, you gotta go Midnight Syndicate. I don't think this particular album is my all-time favorite, but it's still flawless and I have absolutely no complaints. Highly recommended!

Based primarily upon the legendary Universal creatures like Count Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman, The Creature From The Black Lagoon {"The Four Crown Kings of Halloween"} The Mummy, and Hammer characters, it is a musical tribute to the 'Golden Age' of Horror.

At times, one detects certain recognizable pieces that have been included in previous releases, renamed, and heard in Requiem, Dark Tower, Unwanted Visitor, Witching Hour, along with a plethora of familiar, realistic atmospheric sound effects added throughout {howling wolves, squawking ravens, a yowling cat, scattering bats, bell tolls, rushing wind, slamming doors, creaking gates, whispers, thunder, a bubbling laboratory, electrodes, rattling chains, crashing glass, footsteps} which is actually quite enjoyable, enhancing the theme of the opus nicely, making one feel at home.

The insert displays photographic scenes of The Wolfman haunting/hunting through a foggy graveyard, and a moonlit Castle Dracula on a cliff's edge, while Bela leers from behind a doorway on the back.

Not just for Halloween, these would actually go quite well while one goes about appreciating several collections, creating art, or even reading, and otherwise while going about various other pleasurable nocturnal dractivities.

Ah.....horror movies. Gotta love the black and white silents and talkies of long ago. Gotta love the color classics as well. What would I do without them? To me, there are horror movies...........and then there's everything else.

Some of the iconic stories, monsters, and settings associated with horror and Halloween originated from the imaginations of authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, H.P. Lovecraft, Mary Shelley, Shirley Jackson, Daphne du Maurier, and many others. Dracula. Frankenstein's creature. The Mummy. Haunted castles. Graveyards. Haunted houses. Spooky villages. Mad scientists' laboratories. These authors wrote their stories, and in later years the advent of motion pictures brought these stories, characters, and settings to life in cinematic form. Black and white silent movies and talkies such as The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari (1919), Nosferatu (1922), The Phantom Of The Opera (1925), Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), The Mummy (1933), Bride Of Frankenstein (1935), and The Wolfman (1941) paved the way for the horror movies of the coming decades. In the process, legendary horror movie actors from these classics emerged - Shreck, Chaney, Lugosi, Karloff, Chaney, Jr., as well as musical composers such as James Bernard, Franz Waxman, Franz Reizenstein, Benjamin Frankel, Malcolm Williamson, Hans J. Salter, and, in later years, such composers as Bernard Herrmann, Humphrey Searle, Georges Auric, John Williams, John Carpenter, Pino Donaggio, Lalo Schifrin, Harry Sukman, Rick Wilkins, James Horner, Danny Elfman, and many others.

These iconic stories, monsters, settings, movies, actors, and composers are legendary - this is what it's all about.
