Let me first preface by saying I am not a hardware computer guy at all. With this install kit it only took 30 minutes to transfer my entire hard drive to include the operating system. It was simple. It had four or five simple step-by-step instructions and my laptop runs at amazing speeds due to my new hard drive which I will review next. It is 11/9/2013 at 2:14 pm. I started the whole process of replacing my hard drive and it all took under 40 minutes! Amazing product! Amazon helped me out again!

I was disappointed in the product, personally. If this is for someone who only has USB 2 and is a Windows user, and wants it to be as simple as possible, then this product will suit your needs. But know the following:

It's a USB 2.0 transfer cable, so this is just about the slowest mechanism you can use to transfer the data. If your drive is 500GB or more, this will be an overnight or all-day process.

As PC user, you're much better off doing one of the following: Get a USB3 to eSata cable if your machine has USB3. OR if you have a desktop PC, you can attach both drives to it internally with eSata cables, and use a trial product like Macrium Reflect or many free products, and make a perfect clone of the drive.

If you're a Mac user, the software won't work for you. The package includes instructions for using disk utility, and they are slightly incorrect LOL. Unfortunately, I have forgotten what, formatting the drive or naming it properly perhaps, but it's a common sense thing and googling will get you the instructions you actually need. If you're going to use a Mac, you're much better off buying an eSata to firewire/thunderbolt/usb3 cable or using a desktop computer's internal connections described above.

And if you're a linux user, you'll again want to get the appropriate cables and your favorite cloning software, such as GParted.

If you purchase a Crucial SSD Hard drive I highly recomend this cable and software for cloning. Tried a few other ways that have always worked, they did not see drive properly. Ordered this cable, installed software and completed in less than an hour.

This kit was absolutely AWESOME for cloning my 2008 MacBook Pro 200 GB HD to a Crucial M500 240 GB SSD Hard Drive.
It couldn't have been simpler.

Step by Step Instructions:
=====================
1) Plug in the cable to the SSD,
2) Plug the other end into the MacBook Pro
3) Reboot into Recovery mode (Option Key then choose Recovery drive).
4) Choose Disk Utility
5) Choose the SSD & click Partition at top (Build your partition-GUID Partition Table selected)
- Click Build Partition, GUID Table selected, MacOS Journaled, apply, partition
6) Click on the Hard Drive to clone & choose Restore from top
7) Drag the SSD Partition into the Destination box
8) Click Restore (and confirm "erase" on the data warning)
9) Go take a break for a couple hours (mine took just under 2 hours to clone 160 GB of data)
10) When done, turn off the computer, you're done! Unhook the cable & you're now cloned.

OR, to confirm it worked, reboot, hold the OPTION key down, and choose the SSD to boot from when it comes up.
It won't boot super fast over USB 2.0, but as long as it boots is all you care about. If it works, turn the computer off & proceed to install your newly cloned HD in your computer.

There's also a great video that shows this step by step. Do a Google search for
"HOW TO CLONE MAC OS X USING DISK UTILITY"
It's the first YouTube video that shows up.

For installing it in a 2008 MacBook Pro, I Google searched for "how to install ssd in 2008 macbook pro".

If you are replacing the hard drive in your laptop or installing an SSD, then this Crucial Install Kit is for you!
Physical installation is easy, just plug in the new hard drive or SSD onto the dongle (cable) and plug it into a USB port. The software asks you to ID the source drive and target drive and then it seamlessly migrates your data from the old drive to the new. I didn't have to re-install any software or recover files from backup onto the new drive since everything was all there when I booted from it. I would highly recommend purchasing the Crucial Install Kit. It worked great cloning my laptop's hard drive to my new SSD.

However, there are a couple of things to be aware of:
1) The dongle is REQUIRED in order for the cloning software to work. If you try to clone 2 internal drives you will get an error stating it can't find the Apricorn Device.
2) If you connect a full-size hard drive (desktop drive) to the Apricorn dongle, it will not spin up when connected to the USB port. I didn't have time to search for a solution to this problem (I suspect the full-size hard drive needs +12v not the +5v available via the USB). A laptop's hard drive works just fine on the dongle.
