DO NOT USE this product!!! I had the same issue where I got brown lines on my lower three front teeth and it looks like I have never brushed my teeth before. I posted this review on Colgate's website and surprise! they did not publish my review. It says in small print that it could stain teeth but I didn't think like this. So disappointed.

Update 10/14/14: went for regular cleaning and hygienist was able to remove all the brown lines. Not only were they on the bottom teeth but the top front as well. Will go back to using ACT since it doesn't stain.

When I switched to invisalign and found out that I would need to use mouthwash after every meal, I groaned. I've never been a fan and never used it regularly.

After extensive research I stumbled on this Colgate Total brand, and although all of their colorful varieties are alcohol-free, this is by far my favorite. The "burn" is mild enough that I am able to tolerate a full 45 second rinse, and the taste is smooth and evaporates only a few minutes after use. It leaves my mouth feeling fresh and clean without an overwhelming taste that destroys the rest of my morning.

The purple color is also fun and helps keep the product attractive to the kids.

This is a good non-alcoholic mouthwash with a fresh minty taste and it seems to cleanse your mouth very well. It contains saccharin, which has a bit of an aftertaste, but not too bad in this product. Seems to do the job and does leave a long lasting clean taste in your mouth. Some may like that, some may not. Overall, I like it fine.

As someone with bad gums, I have for years relied on Listerine -- or a generic equivalent -- to help keep gingivitis under control.

Of course, the down side of Listerine is the sting of the alcohol as you rinse. It's bracing to some, painful to others.

This Colgate Total Mouthwash supposedly has the same anti-gingivitis properties and none of the alcohol.

Indeed, rinsing your mouth with this stuff is a pleasant experience. It tastes rather like the rinse at the dentist's office and leaves a clean taste in your mouth, with perhaps a slight chemical aftertaste.

I can't make any claims about the anti-gingivitis properties, as I'm not due at the dentist's office for a few months. I can say I don't seem to see any less plaque collecting at the back of my mouth, as excavated by the rubber-tipped cleaning tool I use every night in my endless dental regimen.

I have deducted one star because this mouthwash is hella expensive, north of thirty cents an ounce compared to about six cents an ounce for the generic Listerine I buy from Dollar General.

So I for one will probably opt for the generic Listerine. But if you're in a 12-step program or need to avoid alcohol -- and you can afford this product -- you should probably try it.

PROS:

* Alcohol-free formula doesn't sting when you rinse.
* Supposed to protect against germs for 12 hours.

CONS:

* Very expensive compared to Listerine or generic equivalents with alcohol.
* Doesn't seem to reduce plaque any more than Listerine.

Not mind blowingly tasteful or anything, but doesn't burn or stay in mouth forever, which is more than I can ask for when mouthwashes are concerned.
With cavity AND gingivitis protection, I know that I'm not missing out on anything either. Staying with this one as long as it's available and decently priced.

I thought this would help after brushing, and it does make your mouth feel cleaner.

HOWEVER, I read the fine print which mentioned it could cause teeth staining. I looked, and yes my teeth were getting stained, and it is the only thing I've done differently lately. So I threw it away. So there's a heads up.

Before using this, I used the Listerine brand. I used to be scared of using mouth wash because of the stinging. My eyes would water every time. However, this one doesn't sting at all. It leaves my mouth feeling fresh and smelling minty. I'll definitely buy again but I'll probably look for a bigger bottle next time. This is a small bottle and doesn't last long if you rinse twice a day.
