If your municipally-supplied water is over 100 psi, you need to reduce that pressure or your appliances will fail prematurely, your water heater is most especially vulnerable. I live at the lowest part of town, the pressure exceeded 120 psi. I was replacing water heaters about one every five years, washing machine and garden hoses were constantly having to be replaced, faucet and dishwasher vales failed with clock-work regularity. A neighborhood handyman had suggested this product years ago, but I thought it would so reduce water flow my shower and outdoor watering would suffer. But the repairs were getting intolerable, I had to do something. So to my surprise, after installation, water flow wasn't significantly reduced, just the excess pressure. If you've been putting this off, there is no longer any valid excuse to so. There are cheaper units, but this one is made in America and is of very high quality.

My house was built in 1966 and had a Watts 3/4" U5B series pressure reducing valve. According to the Watts website, the U5B is a higher performance/capacity model than this LF25AUB-Z3 3/4", and comparing the charts on the volume @pressure, there does appear to be a difference, but it looked small at the pressures that represent my operating environment. My old U5B was no longer regulating pressure, and so everything in my house was being subjected to 120psi that comes off my street. This is relatively close to the 150psi safety release on the hotwater tank and it was wreaking havoc with anything less than contractor grade garden hoses (blowing them apart after a few months in service). I became concerned that the high pressure might also destroy a toilet/sink supply line and in the worst case, flood the house while we were gone.

I tried to get a repair kit for my U5B and by all accounts I ordered the right kit, but none of the parts fit. Maybe someone accidentally swapped the parts bags between two kits while comparing, or maybe the U5B I had was so old that the design had changed a bit. For whatever reason, the bell housing dimensions on my U5B did not match the dimensions specs noted by Watts. Even though "3/4" was clearly forged in the side of the valve and the sticker on it clearly read U5B. Anyway, I don't know if the old valve was Lead-Free or not. So I decided it was worth it to just order a new valve. The direct modern replacement for the U5B is going for around $300 +/-, depending on your source, and Amazon didn't have any sources.

But the LF25AUB-Z3 3/4" was $80 shipped to my door. So I took a chance and ordered it.

Works as it should, for how long don't know. Bought these at the Home Depot (they do not sell them now) but they did not seem to last very long which is very highly unusual. This valve should be good for 20 years or more as I replaced the original one in the home when it was 35 years new. In my area (uphill mountain) this contraption is an absolute necessity as the local water company really pumps up the pressure to get the water up the mountain.
This Watts valve was different than the one from HD as the pressure adjusting screw has a seal on the front, do not know if this is a Watts engineering change or HD sells junk. The last HD valve lasted last than a year and was leaking from the pressure adjusting screw. I always keep a spare on hand now.

This was installed as a replacement for an older identical valve. It is working properly, the hammering in the pipes has stopped. The online purchase was much lower price than the local plumbing supply house. The original lasted about 50 years.

IMPORTANT!!! So this is the 3rd one of these I've owned in the last 15 years. The one that came with the new house wouldn't regulate pressure properly, so I replaced it with an identical one. It worked fine for 14 years, but then started to leak slowly. I really needed the same form factor to make sure everything hooked up right, so I ordered a 3rd one. The leak from the 2nd seemed to be coming from an odd place, underneath the unit. There are two large shallow nuts underneath the unit (at the end of the two short cylinders facing down) and one of them seemed to be leaking. I couldn't imagine why since they seemed pretty sturdy. The only thing I could think of is that it wasn't tight from the factory. I tried tightening it and it was indeed a little loose. Furthermore, a couple of the 6 screws up top weren't on as tightly as some others, so before installing the new one, I checked to make sure all the screws and nut-ends were tight on the brand new unit, and sure enough they were not!

I think this is probably a quality product that is generally poorly assembled, so MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE TIGHTNESS OF ALL THE NUTS AND SCREWS BEFORE INSTALLING THIS!!!

I hope this helps others to avoid the same problem.

I WAS PLEASED AT THE QUALITY OF CONSTRUCTION IN THIS REGULATOR. ALL BRASS AND STAINLESS. INSTALLED ON MY WELL PUMP TO CONTROL WATER HAMMER FROM THE W/A HEAT PUMP UNIT. PUMP NO LONGER CYCLES DURING A/C RUN TIMES.
