Great filter for the money. It's similar in design to an eheim and can be zero bypass if used correctly. The only cons are it vibrates a lot. The pump is located on the outflow tube so it's smaller of a unit. It's very quiet, unless it's pushed up against something, then you hear the vibration. I replaced the center sponge with a panty hose filled with eheim bio media. Used on an 8 gallon shrimp tank. Intake and outflow plastic is quality, comes with intake strainer, spray bar and a smaller spray nozzle. For this price you can't go wrong :)

The built in filter in my 5 gallon Fuval Chi cube is horribly inadequate and new pads weren't cheap, after realizing I spent nearly $50 in first year on filters I started looking to add a better filter.. Not wanting to disturb the steam line looks of this nice aquarium I knew I wanted to hide a canister filter at ground level under the server it was sitting on.. A lot of the nano canister filters I was looking at were for sitting level with the tank or hanging off the back, the pump wont work if you intend on putting it in a cabinet below, they also cost more than this.

With over 3ft head it has great flow, tank looks really clean even with a small fancy goldfish making a mess, I put a layer of Hydroton at the bottom of the sponges for biological filtering. The Included tubing and hardware is very nice quality.

Purging the air out was easy as you just flip the canister upside down until you hear the pump stall from air then flip it back over; keep repeating until no more air comes out.

I am setting up a 55 gallon planted goldfish tank with a Magnum 350 filter I was given with the tank, I like the filter but it lacks any biological filtering. Now that I have seen this unit in person I intend to get the bare bones model of this with no pump, fill it up entirely with hydroton and install it inline with the output of the Magnum 350, should be more effective than adding a biowheel or another filter.

The pump with this filter is quiet but does vibrate, I was hearing a hum coming from the pump, however when I picked it up it was hardly audible so a small section of egg-foam under it made it quiet enough to be accepted in my dining room. I also have the unit laying on its side since the shelf is not tall enough; does not seem to have any effect on it.

This had no flow. I'm using in a 10 gallon reef tank and it does an ok job moving a part of the water but this isn't good enough. I recommend using in a 5 gallon or just a freshwater fish tank. Also my pump went out after like 3 months, they did send me a replacement pump but still not enough suction

I'm using this on a 5 gal. freshwater tank. Loaded The filter with ceramic tubes for biological, chemi-pure, and sponge. It has good flow, is practically silent, and has been running for 2 months with no flow reduction. I also put a sponge over the intake to keep my tiny animals out. I gave 4 stars because of the difficulty I had getting all the air out of the canister and intake line. Holing the canister sideways above the tank with the pump at the highest level, and shaking it for a while cleared the air. It's due for a cleaning, and I will have to do the same routine. A pain, but the SunSun is still an economical, efficient, and small solution.

I have this on a 20 long planted tank. It's not quite as strong as I had hoped. I have added a second Toms mini canister also which seems to have better flow.

The initial set up was super easy and getting it started was a breeze. But after about 3 weeks the flow slowed down a lot (no biggie I thought just needs cleaned). I disassembled the filter and cleaned off all the sponges which had turned all brown and released a ton of stuff when washed!

Then putting the filter back together it wouldn't siphon correctly the hose had become clogged at the ball valve causing a slow flow so the canister would just empty and shoot air into the tank and was extremely loud! Took it apart again cleaned the hoses and put it back together turned it on and it seemed to be working fine until I noticed water running down the side of the filter at a constant stream. YIKES!

Had to take it apart a third time in the same day and found no real reason for it to leak so I placed it inside a 5 gallon bucket with a towel under to silence the vibrations just in case it does it again.

I would only purchase this again fora smaller tank, and will probably be moving it to a 5 or 10 gallon in the future.

PROS:
easy to clean
quiet when set on a towel
high quality parts

CONS:
hard to get working correctly
leaks easily
bulky and tall
not very powerful flow for the size

Great product. Easy to set up with little problem. Took me longer to cut the right sized tubes to my tank then to put it together. It came with a nice set of sponges, and space to put carbon into it. About a cup and a half can fit within the space given. Easy to clean, turn the valve off let excess drain out to the tank, unplug and clean. Super quite, haven't heard one mumble of noise from it. Running on a 30 gallon column tank, the filter it came with was rated for a 20 gallon and clogged up in a matter of days. Replaced it with this, and i haven't had to touch it aside from every month of rinsing the sponges off. Which is a great improvement for me. Would recommend buying this filter, works fantastically.
