I recently did a review of the HMDX HX-B510GY (GREY) Bedside Sound System. I originally purchased this unit so I can dock my HTC One cell phone and charge it at night next to my bed. Unfortunately, since my HTC One has an Otter case it will not fit in the top dock area. This review shows you how this system sounds and works with the iphone 4s. Thank you. Ray

I looked and looked for an iPhone 5 bedside radio/clock with no success. Finally I tried this and here's what I've found. I had requirements for my unit, the first of which was that I could use it with my phone case on. I'd toyed with the idea of getting a different case that would work with the iHome or Sony models, but I like the case I have and haven't the slightest desire to remove it every night to charge my phone or when I wanted to play music, plus, I wasn't all that confident the charging connections on these other units wouldn't overcharge the phone and damage it.

The deal with this device is that it's a speaker system for your phone via Bluetooth rather than direct connect (unless you use aux) so you use your own beloved and trusted lightning cable for the charging. The clock has a USB port for the cable which works fine or you can just plug your cable in to an outlet adapter as you have been. The cradle for the phone to sit is generous and I have no doubt an Otterbox case will sit in there fine. I have an Incipio Dual Pro case and there's plenty of room left over for a bigger phone and case or other device such as an iPod classic in a case.

There's a slot down the back of the cradle for your cable to enter so the phone sits properly in the cradle with the cable attached.

The unit may not be perfect for you so I'll list its features and things I see as drawbacks. There are two alarms that I find easy to set and use (the directions are clear). They have a soft to louder technology and snooze capability.Read more ›

I love the look, the awesome sound and the functionality of this. Not only does it play FM but the bluetooth feature was the selling point for me - i can connect this to my iphone and play pandora through it. The purple color pictured is a lot brighter than the actual purple on this clock. The actual color is a bit more muted (which is what i like). Although the buttons do not light up on top, that is not an issue with me.

Another thing, there are presets even though the manual does not indicate this - 20 presets to be exact. I only happen to stumble upon it while playing around with the buttons. First, tune to your desired station, then push and hold the center button (right arrow with the pause symbol - >|| ) until you see P01 (preset 1) appear on the screen, now push the button ( >|| ) one more time to set it. Repeat the same steps, however, when you see P01 appear again, just press the right arrow ( > ) for P02 and then push the center button ( >|| ) to set! The FM reception is spectacular - hardly any static at all.

There is also a USB port on the back of this clock. You can also set the alarm volume (separate from the radio volume) as high or low as you wish which ranges from 0 - 32 of which I set at the loudest as i am a heavy sleeper. You can also connect a device via the AUX line (included) for those devices that do not have bluetooth. What more can a person ask for in an alarm clock??

It does everything it's advertised to do. It's a smaller size, which is nice since we have smaller nightstands due to our small bedroom. The sound is good. One thing I wish it had is presets. When you want to change the radio station you have to hit the arrows to move up and down the dial. And setting the clock is a little out of the ordinary, but not bad. Just follow the directions that come with it and you're fine.

The sound that comes from it is nice too. It's better than a typical clock radio, but not high-end, which isn't what I expected anyway. It serves our needs just fine.

The buttons on top are all integrated into the flat, rubberized surface. So if you fumbling in the dark to turn on the display or turn off the alarm, it can be a little challenging. However, that flat, rubberized surface for the buttons also makes the buttons a little less loud than standard buttons. The sound of pressing them is muffled, if that's a concern to you.

All-in-all, a nice clock.

Have had the clock for a few weeks and really like it. The top button area has a rubberized texture to it making the no-show buttons easy to push. The device holder in the back has held both an iPhone 4 and an iPod Classic. The wire router slot in the back is a plus to help keep the clean appearance. The color is a muted purple....classy...and matte finish. The initial clock face setting is quite bright, we just need to find the directions on how to dim. The alarm is easy to set and works as it should. Radio and auxiliary devices play just fine and sound is solid. For the Aux input, we thought it was not working at first, but realized we had to also adjust the volume on the aux device and then adjust on clock...not sure why but it was no big deal once we realized it. Have not yet tried the speaker phone. Would highly recommend this compact and useful alarm clock radio speaker.
