Okay so before buying this I saw the review about the guy who had the fire and dismissed it, figuring it was likely installed improperly or a one in a thousand defect. However upon receiving mine it looks like alls well except the box contains this bizarre label on the outside:
"Please Note: These are positive ground controllers. If grounding is necessary it must be on the positive line. If the controller is to be used on a vehicle which has battery negative on the chassis, loads connected to the controller must not have an electrical connection to the vehicle body."
Now I'm not sure what to make of that but I have extensive electronics and 12v automotive installation experience professionally and this sounds like they designed this device very poorly for its intended application. What it seems they are saying is "do not attach any additional grounding to the unit because its ground scheme is opposite of everything you'll ever hook up to it and every vehicle made".
It's got a plastic case but a metal back panel with 4 screws in it. Removing the back reveals the screws go into just the plastic of the case, so the metal back and screws are electrically isolated from the unit's internal circuit board and terminals. There are 3 power transistors which use that metal back plate as a heat sink but they are electrically insulated from it with non conductive pads. (the back plate is steel, should be aluminum if its purpose is a heat sink)
So in theory it should still be usable on 12v negative ground systems (virtually every car made since grandpa was born) provided the consumer does not open the case, decipher the circuit board to ascertain its positive ground path points, solder a wire to one and ground it to the vehicle.
NOW WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD DO THAT?

This is a great solar charge controller for this price range. The display indicates the state of the battery, how many amps are currently coming in from the panels, totat amp hours (resettable) have come in from the panels total and the battery voltage at the present time. You can also use it to turn on a light at dusk and have it stay on for a preset time.

Keep in mind you must connect things in the correct order, battery first then solar panels. To disconnect, disconnect the solar panel(s) first then the battery. I suspect those who have had issues with this controller failed to do this.

Be sure to place a 30 amp fuse between the panels and the charge controller close to the controller. Also, put a 30 amp fuse very close to the battery connection.

Renogy's tech support is friendly and excellent to work with answering most questions within a few hours.

This charge controller is awesome. One of the main reasons I went with this one was for all the readouts. I was mainly concerned with seeing what the panels were putting out for amps. Its amazing to see the difference at different times of the day. It also tells you voltage levels on you battery bank, battery status, and a ton of other things. I really like it. The terminal screws are so much better than the model below this one. I was so frustrated with that model that I ordered this and am not looking back. I love it!

Well worth the extra 10.00 when compaired to the LED model. The heatsink is more robust, and the LED display tells you the actual voltage and currents. Very impressive. I use a box fan to keep the unit cool. Wish they had a day and night setting. Current models just have a night mode for automatic lighting.
Also the Insructions could be more to the point. It says that the Cell, Battery and Load must be hooked up properly...but it dosent say in what order. I have heard that you should hook up the battery first and then the Cell, then the load.
All and all I am very impressed with the unit.

Working well with my 50 watt panel, also Renogy. Have 5 amp fuse connecting panel to controller and 10 amp to the battery (using 10 awg). 1 star off due to having difficulty tightening the screws. But is working great so far.

Installation was easy and unit works flawlessly. I installed this on my solar generator last fall and it's been keeping the battery fully charged and automatically ever since. I placed one panel in the window and ran a lead to this unit which is connected to the battery. I've checkd the voltage and it remains consistently at 12.46 volts dc. I have other panels that I can connect in parallel if I use the generator. With 10 amp capacity this will handle all the panels I'll ever purchase for the generator. My generator has an 1800 watt continuous inverter which produces enough power to work any portable power tool I own. The regeneration doesn't need to be as large as the consumption if the battery is large enough. So, therefore this 10 amp controller does what I need. I actually built the generator to my own specification so it would handle the deep freezer and perhaps a computer, tv and a light if the power failed for a period of say 12 hours or so. This occasional use coupled with 80 watts of panels makes this controller more than equal to the task of recharging my generator's battery. I'm using a deep discharge marine battery with 850 cold cranking amps. I figured that even full time use of the deep freezer connected to the solar generator that it would be capable of regeneration on cloudy days without serious drain on the battery. I'm figuring 500 watts while running the freezer approximately 12-15 minutes per hour. That's about 1/5 to 1/4th of an hour for consumption calculations. You can do the math. I can't see how I can get close to capable use of the system and this controller and as stated above I should be able to have some entertainment and lighting (using high efficiency bulbs).Read more ›
