This review covers the Maxboost Defender Air Battery Case and gives you a complete review of
the product and its size, box contents, features, and highlights.

I purchased the Maxboost Defender Air about a week ago and I was quite frankly impressed
with it for several reasons. The box was well designed and looked professional. Inside the box a
micro-USB charging / syncing cable was included as well as a brief manual.

Most Importantly*

The battery was able to fully re-charge the iPhone 5 in a very short period of time. The phone is
now able to last all day long even while being subjected an array of power demanding tests.

The case also offers enough protection to make me feel confident that if I dropped my phone
from a short distance I would be protected.

The case comes in two colors, a matte black and also a glossy white.

The case itself is exceptionally light and thin. The fact that this small unit has a 2,000mAh
integrated battery is very good compared to other cases in the industry. The buttons alongside the
entire case were easy to manipulate and seem to be able to handle a bit of abuse which I inflicted
on them. Also, the two-piece design is as user friendly as they come. Simply, slide the top piece
onto the bottom piece using the guide rails on the top piece.

The Defender also comes with speaker holes to allow for original sound levels. As per the
custom, when it comes to battery cases the Defender uses an LED system to determine the
amount of battery power remaining in the cases. I do like that they placed the LED indicator on
the bottom of the case instead of on the back.Read more ›

In reading the other reviews for this product, I was concerned before placing my order. However, when I received the charger, I was pleasantly surprises. The battery pack charged to 4 lights via the microUSB port via a wall charger with no problem. My iPhone 5 charges (to 100%) in roughly the same amont of time as using Apple's cable and wall charger. I can get at least 2 charges from one battery charge when my iPhone is at 40-50%. The volume and power buttons work well through the case, and the location of the charge indicator lights and power switch for battery on the bottom of the case work well.

The only issue I can find, which has been pointed out by other reviewers, which could be significant for some, and is why I gave this 4-stars instead of 5, is that you can not use the earphone port with the batter case attached. The hole that was put into the charging case is simply too small for the plug to fit in. This is not a major problem for me, as I use Bluetooth headsets for calls and music.

Just received the product and am very impressed with the build-quality, fit and finish. Although it increases the weight of the phone, the overall feel is very comfortable to use. The battery charges itself and the iphone at the same rate as it would if it was powered directly from my laptop. Love it.

BUT - The only reason I can't give it a 5-star review is because it definitely cuts the signal strength. I put my iPhone into Test mode which displays numeric Signal strength in dbm rather than bars, and I can see a 5-10dbm drop when the battery case is used. A 10dbm drop is a big deal, that's a 10x drop in power. In areas with a strong signal, this makes no difference. However, if you are located in a place with a very weak signal, this battery case will increase the chances of dropping calls.

So I'm torn over whether to keep it or return it. It a nice product and I like the design - but the reduced signal strength may be a deal killer.

Update: I've lost calls and data signals too often in common places I've had no trouble before the MaxBoost. Which forces me to remove the case to get a steady signal again. So if I have to keep the battery-case separately from the phone, what's the point of having a battery-case. I am returning this item, and will order a non-case battery pack instead. (downgrading to 3-star. Fine if you are in a strong signal area, but problematic if you need to frequently use it in areas with a weaker signal)

After owning four Mophie Packs, I have not been pleased and will NEVER purchase another, especially at their price. After owning the Mophie pack for a short time, the charging slot on the unit will become loose (happened on all four units) and eventually will not work. Furthermore, Mophie does not offer the manufacturer standard 2400 MAH charging pack (unlike the standard on the Maxboost). Their normal unit comes with a 1500 MAH charging battery. Now, let me please let the readers know, after doing a little research, I purchased two 2400 MAH "Maxboost" units. One for an IPhone 5 and one for an Iphone 4. All I can say is, "What a difference!" The quality, workmanship and functions are very nice. The charging connection is quality and one I believe will last much longer than the Mophie. Best yet, the units cost is $69.95 versus the way overrated Mophie at $99.95. If anyone reading this wants to throw money away, buy the Mophie. If you want quality, and probably two additional charges on your phone away from home at a much cheaper price, buy the Maxboost. I have had both units now and the choice is obvious, with absolutely NO apprehension at all, MAXBOOST!
