This is about an 8 inch adapter cable that seems constructed to withstand regular use with a portable handheld, not just at a stationary location or workbench.

The SO239 end of the cable has a fortified bit of black heat-shrink tubing that keeps the coaxial cable from kinking right at the crimped retainer of the connector. There's another piece of heat-shrink tubing on the SMA-F cable connector, again as a way to anchor the miniature coax cable.

The cable itself is flexible, but resists kinking. The connectors both have a bright, golden colored center pin that will reveal any tarnishing or dirt. The insulation to the outer threads looks like a high quality dielectric, but the texture does not resemble the familiar Teflon insulation.

Notice the lock nut on the SMA-F cable connector. This is not easy to use in practice, since it goes into a slightly recessed chassis-mounting connector on the radio that ordinarily receives a rubber antenna. But, it's possible to fully seat the connector into the radio without having to use the locknut. By draping the cable down the back of the radio, it's easy to hold the cable and radio in the hand at the same time to minimize mechanical stress.

The use of this adapter cable makes it easier to use the radio than with a screw-in one piece adapter. The RG-58 A/U coaxial cable to the mobile antenna is NOT right there at the radio. Instead that cable and its PL259 are out of the way and hanging below the radio while in use. This probably minimizes the mechanical stress on the connector inside the radio.

I have not noticed any significant reception difference from the slight loss of having an additional connection in the line, compared with a one piece adapter SO239->SMA-F.

As most ham operators know, it's the little things that can make you nuts or happy. This is one of those happy things. If you have a Baofeng hand held and want to try different antennas it's best to have a short coax going from the radio to the normal coax end. Keeps things from getting pulled apart, dashed on the floor, generally make the use an headache. This adapter and jumper works like a charm. I now can hook my 5R up to my 2meter "J"e antenna or my handheld 2meter Yagi. It's nice to sit on the deck with the Yagi on a camera tripod and hit the repeater with a bit more signal.

Looked like a great cable, but after a month of periodic use, the SMA end simply slid off the cable. One thing I noticed right away is there was hardly any shield wires under the crimped barrel (see photo). I would have given it more stars even with the end coming off as I can understand a bad crimp once in a while, but to have no shield wires brings it down to one star. I assume that explains the sketchy performance I've had with my external antenna as well.

Just what's needed to adapt your Baofeng UV-5R and other similar handhelds to PL259 coax connector. Thin highly flexible 6" coax with well mounted connectors. Relieves stress on the radio antenna mount connector if you're using a microphone. Need longer coax length for convenient PTT operation.

This adapter got me up and running in no time and seems well made.
I will say that 6" seems a little short now that its in my hands and connected to the radio. You almost have to double over the cord and hold it along side your radio as to not put stress on any of the joints. Perhaps some 90* connectors and/or adding a BNC connector would make this a little less cumbersome. Even leaving the radio free standing and using an auxillary mic requires a bit of a balancing act. The heavy SO connector likes to topple the little Baofengs.

This lasted about a week before the SMA end just fell off. Apparently the manufacturer thinks that shrink tubing is sufficient to secure the end connectors (no solder). I ended up buying a a straight SMA to UHF adapter like the attached picture and it is much much better than this piece a junk! Don't worry about the adapter stressing the antenna connection on the HT just manage your coax correctly. I run my coax through the belt clip for this purpose. Buying this thing is like throwing $7 in the trash!

This allows me to connect to one of my Baofeng radios while in my SUV that has a roof antenna. Works very well.

I'm using this to attach a Baofeng HT to my old 2m/70cm ham antenna that I have sitting inside my shack, re-purposed from its days riding atop my car for mobile duty. The cable is very flexible and doesn't feel like it's going to come apart with normal indoor use, and while it is a solid connection to each connector, I do wonder how well it would hold up in a more hostile environment. The SMA connection doesn't fit over the Baofeng's antenna jack totally but it's a solid connection and the adapter cable does not seem to adversely affect reception or transmission performance as best I can tell.

While this design takes some of the strain off the radio's connection like a direct SMA-to-SO-239 adapter would cause, it's not quite perfect as I have to twirl the radio to unscrew the SMA connector. The safest and easiest way to disconnect this from the radio appears to be to unscrew the SO-239 side first then unscrew the cable from the radio, but it's kind of a pain. Still, for my intended purpose (the Baofeng is strictly an in-shack radio) it works well enough.
