I've been using the ReadyNAS series since before Netgear bought the company that started them: Infrant. My first ReadyNAS (NV+) failed once, corrupting all data. However, the corruption/failure never occurred again, not even with the successors, the ReadyNAS Ultra, and today's ReadyNAS 300 series.

One thing I disliked about all the older ReadyNAS was their slow network transmission speed. Files took forever to copy from one location to another. When Netgear decided to revamp the ReadyNAS series from scratch, basing its processor on the Intel processor, the company has made great progress in the performance department.

The ReadyNAS 300 with its dual Gigabit connections is quite speedy, though it is not a top-performer when compared to some other brands, such as Qnap, Synology, Drobo. What I do like about the ReadyNAS 300 are:

1. X-RAID. Automatically expands your storage capacity as you add higher-capacity or additional drives without much user intervention. Traditionally, a RAID configuration requires you to back up the data, tear down the RAID, reconfigure it for the RAID protection you want, and restore the data onto it. X-RAID does away with that. For those who don't know what RAID is -- to put it simply, it provides storage protection. For example, if you have all 4 bays occupied with hard drives, you can lose 1 drive and still have your data in tact. Simply replace the bad drive with a new one, and your RAID is rebuilt, and you now have a redundant storage system again. Lose 2 or more drives, and the data is lost. The chances of 2 drives failing at the same time, however, is slim.

2. RSync over SSH.

I now have 3 Netgear ReadyNAS devices; this 312 model, the 4-bay 314 and an old 2-bay ReadyNAS Duo.

From experience of the range I would strongly recommend any Netgear ReadyNAS to anybody considering either wanting to venture into the world of network attached storage or to somebody looking to upgrade from an older system.

This 312 version is excellent for home or small office users who are looking for a 2 bay NAS. As this NAS is so multi-functional and versatile I have split my review up into sections so you can pick and choose the parts relevant to you, I hope this helps but if you have any questions please post a comment and I will do my best to answer any queries you may have.

WHY THE 312?
********************
Thankfully Netgear have made it easy for customers to work out the differences in the various NAS’s in their current range (in the past it used to be a bit confusing).

As a guide the first digit (1,3 or 5) refers to the processing power of the NAS and the third digit (2,4 or 6) is the number of bays in the NAS, so this 312 is mid-range in terms of processing power and has 2 disk bays. No matter which Netgear ReadyNAS you go for they all run the latest ReadyNAS OS 6 software which is very easy to use and also plenty of more advanced features available for those that want to use them.

The 312 is really well made, with a quality and robust feel to it, with a smooth black metal casing and a plastic high gloss front I think it looks the part too (as much as any NAS can do). I have uploaded a couple of images so you can see how it looks but safe to say it looks very nice and understated wherever you might put it at home or in the office, I have mine sat on my desk at home.

The Netgear ReadyNAS 312 is clearly aimed at small business users, but it also has many features that would appeal to home users as well. Though I don't have a ton of experience with NAS systems, I decided to give the ReadyNAS 312 a try and make some broad comparisons with the Synology NAS that I've been using for about a year now.

Setup of the ReadyNAS was extremely simple and quick. I was expecting a little more user interaction, but it wasn't required. The setup process enabled the mirror setup of the ReadyNAS within minutes, giving me 924.86GB of usable storage space with the two 1TB Hitachi drives that come with this version of the 312. The web interface of the 312 looks fantastic and is easy to navigate. Synology uses a "desktop" interface that looks and feels like a PC desktop, but Netgear stuck with a clean web GUI that's both attractive and responsive. Web management allows you to configure the 312, set up alerts, view logs, check performance, create user accounts, and more.

I found the network performance of the 312 to be excellent. It was slightly faster than the Synology DS212j, copying five 1GB files from my local storage to the 312 in 1min 33sec. Of course, the 312 has a faster CPU and much more memory, so it should perform better, especially under heavier loads. It also responded quickly whenever I accessed folders and files over the network. I accessed the 312 using Windows 7/8 and OS X without any problems. I was also able to use Android and iOS devices to stream multimedia and open documents.

Just like Synology, the ReadyNAS 312 supports apps. The 312 supports DLNA by default, however. The 312 automatically enables SMB, AFP, DLNA, UPnP, HTTP, and HTTPS services. You can also turn on NFS, FTP, iTunes, SNMP, and SSH.
