The Latest release from Diamond Select did a superb job with the USS Excelsior, its very detailed with the lights and sounds from the Undiscovered Country and with George Takei's voice makes it an even better buy. I rate this 5/5 because of the detail and the fact that you cant find anything close to this for the price, however there are still minor imperfections....but they did a good job not making it quite as noticeable (even though I did notice the Starfleet pennant on the starboard side was a bit crooked when it was taken it out of the box) no big deal, I mean it is a mass produced collectible, but once you find an imperfection you can position the ship the way you want so you won't see it. The paint scheme is a little bit different than the Enterprise-B, its a touch lighter and cleaner with a different shade of blue and it shows the details more nicely. They used the same display stand as the B ship which is solid, and they continued the nice feature with the lights on only mode when holding down the bridge dome. This is a fabulous quality starship that would complement any Star Trek collection.

Hopefully this review was helpful for those who want to purchase one.

- Best pre-built Excelsior released by any manufacturer to date.
- Audio digitization is very good compared to the old Playmates toys.
- Plastic feels stronger than the model kit version I built over 10 years ago.

Cons
- Nacelles are missing horizontal fins.
- Minor flash that can be filed off.

Lets face it, this is a pretty rare ship. Itʻs taken a long time for them to finally release it. The Playmates version was essentially the Enterprise B that was relabeled as the Excelsior. And the Playmates nacelles sag! The nacelles on this replica don't!

The Diamond Select USS Excelsior has lights and sound and is built well. There is, however, one flaw in the nacelles. The horizontal fins on the aft part of the nacelle are missing, the intercoolers. These intercoolers are located on the outboard part of the nacelle on the most aft part of it. The design of the ship is the best that have ever seen and is most the accurate to date, with exception of the nacelle flaws. Diamond Select needs to do more research on the design to get the next model correct and not be rushed to get it out there in the market. When Diamond Select does the next ship in the line, they need to research it thoroughly and make sure to test it with the fans to make sure it is correct. Overall rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

The ship is well crafted and beautifully detailed.
Lights and sound are excellent.
Noticed a few flaws... the moldings on the necelles are inaccurate, there are two horizontal fins missing.
Also noted that the glue oozed out on the main hull and smeared the paint on several of the windows.

For the money this model/ toy is worth the money. The only flaw is a missing fin on the back of the warp nacells but easy to over look given the attention to the other details. This thing in a darkened room lit by its own internal lighting can blind you. This thing really comes to life.

The Excelsior was first seen in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock under the NX-2000 title, it was suppose to have trans-warp drive but do to Scotty sabotaging it while the Kirk's crew hijack the Enterprise, the Excelsior broke down and the ship was installed with a regular warp drive instead. Years later the ship was handed over to Sulu who became her new Captain. The ship is nicely detailed and comes with a new designed stand that has a peg that inserts to the underside of the ship instead of the ball and joint attachment. I like this way better then the ball and socket joint like the older models had. The ship has different quotes from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and are mostly voiced by Geroge Taki. Pressing down on the bridge will cycle the different quotes while holding it down for a few seconds make the light come on.

This model of the USS Excelsior from STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY is 18-1/4 inches long and 6-7/8 inches wide.
The positives include good detail, impressive blue-and-red lighting and impressive audio on Sulu's dialogue clips from the movie. The audio sounds louder and clearer than the audio clips on Diamond Select's battle-damaged USS Enterprise from STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN. Also, I have seen on other reviews that the stand problem in which the model droops due to a ball joint problem, has been corrected on the Excelsior, although I have not used the stand on my model yet.
The model's negatives are extremely wide panel seams on the "saucer" which give it a toy-like appearance and in real scale, would be wider than a sidewalk (this is also a problem on Diamond Select's Enterprise-D from STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION). As other reviewers have mentioned, the horizontal fins are missing on the rear nacelles.
I bought the Excelsior because STAR TREK VI is my favorite Trek movie, and it has an impressive sleek side profile that makes it the coolest-looking starship. Overall, I recommend the Excelsior as a great addition to any Star Trek model collection.
