Vinyl Lp, 1970!

Tony Bennett is a great pre-rock era recording star and lite-jazz saloon easy listening crooner. Granted.

This album, however, is one of the great kitsch joke Lps among BAD taste vinyl aficiandos. The cover vibe has a middle-aged druggy early '70s "Keep On Truckin'" theme. Tony is decked out in the worst of Las Vegas lounge lizard pop paisley psychedelic mod, with-it, bell-bottom slacks, long sideburns, oh, wow. This the kind of cover art reminiscent of Sammy Davis, Jr., Eddie Fisher, Joey Bishop, and Regis Philbin sporting love beads and Nehru jackets trying to keep up with the Beatles.

Lp track selection (Columbia CS 9980 Lp):
side one--
MacArthur Park/Something/The Look of Love/Here, There and Everywhere/Live for Life/Little Green Apples
side two--
Eleanor Rigby/My Cherie Amour/Is That All There Is?/Here/Sunrise, Sunset

Yes, Tony sings three Beatles tracks, plus Jimmy Webb/Richard Harris (abridged short version), O.C. Smith, and Stevie Wonder, c. 1970. Best WORST track is the William Shatner THE TRANSFORMED MAN (Decca Lp a little before, has "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "Mr. Tambourine Man") inspired reading, "Eleanor Rigby," ping-pong Tony's voice bounding between your stereo speakers, a "talky" long introduction, just an LSD trip off-the-wall reading of that Lennon/McCartney tune.

Tony gamely puts in a professional polish on these songs, but the style just doesn't fit him. This album is one of three Lps from the late '60s that Columbia and attendant artists don't seem to want remembered: THE NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS ON TOUR THROUGH MOTORTOWN and THE BROTHERS FOUR SING THE LENNON-MCCARTNEY SONGBOOK. Add to those, maybe, MEL TORME' RIGHT NOW!

This is an album I've had for years,I remember when I bought it and the anticipation of listening to it for the first time.Let me say that it did not disappoint me.Tony Bennett was just beginning to reach his peak of singing ability and it shows on this album.Tony sings these new songs of that day with such power and conviction that he actually makes them his own.Maccarthur Park in my opinion gets it's best rendition as Tony brings out the haunting theme of the song. The Look of Love,a great version of this modern classic.Live for Life captures the essence of the jet set lifestyle, while Eleanor Rigby is a remarkable rendition of that Beatles classic. His sigh by the end of the song is priceless to hear.Tony becomes a storyteller in his interpretation. Two of the most beautiful songs on the album are Here and Sunrise,Sunset. Both are powerful pieces of music which in the hands,or I should say voice of Tony Bennett is brought to the level of art. Most of the songs are ballads, but there are a couple of swingers in Little Green Apples and Here,There, and Everywhere which is an
excellent version of another Beatles classic. There is a wide array of music on this album ranging from ballads to swingers to pop songs and even some jazz sounds thrown in for good measure. The orchestrations are fantastic and Tony is in top form. This album gets better each time I hear it.Mr.Bennett is one of the great talents in popular music and this album shows why.If you have the opportunity, buy it and listen to it and you will not regret it.This is what making music is all about.

Tony Bennett did an excellent job on this allbum even though he was not in love with the songs selected for this work. This period piece reflects Tony's versatility and talent. I've been waiting for years for the release of this cd. Tony is one of the last remaining song stylist. Thank you for making this cd(album) available!!
