This is a fun accent tape with medium stickiness, so it can be (carefully) repositioned. It's a high-gratification, bold pop of color or pattern for crafts and cards.

However, I do art journals and mixed media, and it falls far short of washi tape for this purpose. The description claims one can write on it with both pen and pencil, but that's an overstatement. I tried a Staedtler pigment liner, and on a hot day outside it was still smearing on this tape after 10 minutes of drying time. A Faber Castell Pitt Artists Pen was a little better, but still smeary. The Uniball gel pen would write on it only under duress. I don't use ball point pens in my art journals, so even if they do work, it wouldn't be useful for my purposes.

The tape can be torn by hand, but then it's more evident that it is comprised of a color layer and an adhesive layer. Rather than tearing by hand, I recommend either putting the roll in a tape dispenser, or just cutting it with scissors.

If Scotch hadn't claimed this tape could be written on, it could be a 5-star product. It bothers me when companies oversell in their descriptions, claiming a product can do more than it actually lives up to, and I'm sorry to say that Scotch is guilty in this regard. I can still use this tape as a margin accent on cards and such, but for art journaling, I'm sticking to washi tape.

I like this tape, but it's not quite all it's advertised to be. First of all, you can write on it - with some media. A sharpie and a paint pen dried almost instantly, but a rolling ball pen smeared even after letting it dry for several minutes. Strength-wise it's pretty strong. When I pulled on a piece, it noticeably stretched a little, then broke. I didn't have a dispenser, so I cut the tape with scissors, but it's possible to just tear off a piece fairly cleanly.

On the roll, the tape appears to be opaque, but when it's unrolled, it's actually translucent. I taped some pieces onto a lined legal pad, and it was easy to see the ruled lines underneath, especially with the green-colored tape. The tape is sticky, but not so sticky that it can't be repositioned, even on paper.

Besides its obvious use for crafts, I thinks kids will enjoy using the tape for wrapping presents, although it's much more expensive than regular Scotch tape. My wife does a lot of scrapbooks and cards with Stampin' Up materials, and she says that the tape has some possibilities for that. So the tape definitely has some creative uses as long as you're aware of its limitations.

I love this tape! I want more. You just insert roll into tape dispenser and use like any other tape except it's PRETTY! This is so cool. You have 3 different designs and colors to choose in each pack. It was hard to choose just one pack I wanted to try. They all looked so pretty. Then you use it like regular tape, using as much as you need and it looks cool. This is perfect for presents and gifts. Definitely recommend you check this one out as well as the other designs.

Color: Tribal, Blue, Green Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Scotch® Brand Tape has a new kind of tape rolling off the reel. It's meant, I think, to be a competitor to washi tape--the Japanese-made tape that uses thin but tough washi paper and sticky tape.

A package of three rolls of tape was sent to me to try out, and I was thrilled. I'm a fan of Scotch Tape, and this was the same smooth-finish tape as the frosted tape, but in rich color. I was smiling. Until I opened it. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

The tape comes in several colors, in packs of three. You can use them in tape dispensers. The impression I got from the commercial is that it is tough, durable, opaque and strong.

My journal is a Strathmore Mixed Media Journal, with a black cover.

This seems like a nice canvas for bright tape, so I got started. First I put on a green piece of tape, top to bottom, then added a turquoise. So far so good.

But when I tried to remove a piece of the patterned tape, it tore off the roll unevenly. I carefully found a piece where it was whole, and tried again. Another piece sheared off to the edge. In the end, I cut triangles from the damaged tape because I hate wasting the nice pattern.

The inside cover was much harder. The tape is not opaque. You can see the black through the tape. If you overlap the tape, you can see that part. The tape is re-positionable which means that it does not stick permanently. If you are decorating, this is not mixed media, it's mixed messages.

While some of the patterned pieces stayed whole, it was only through very careful manipulation. Most of the pieces tore off at angles.

I was disappointed. Perhaps the tape I had was defective. But as long as the patterned tape doesn't work as well as the solid colors, as long as the colors aren't opaque and don't stay permanently in place, I'm not going to use it.

I like that these are fairly re-positionable. I don't like that the non-patterned ones are see through. I'm using the tape to cover up some writing. The magic tape is marketed as being able to write on, so maybe I'll write on it and see if that does the trick. Also, I'll try this tape on different items. The patterned one is also see through, but it tricks the eye, so you really don't see what's underneath it unless you're really looking. These can be cut with your fingers. However, for a straighter edge I prefer using scissors. Overall, I'm impressed - this was my first time using washi/magic tape.
