I've reviewed the XA pro ultra 2 before and this is the newer XA pro 3D (they're SOOO unimaginative with their names). There are a few changes from the previous model that I would like to point out, so anyone who loved their old salomons will get a heads up.
This new pair has a cleaner upper, making it less cluttered, and unlike the previous model, the tongue is more of a thinnly padded liner, which makes it even less bulky. These changes to the upper was enough to make me downsize half a size. (I wear 8.5 comfortably in the Pro 2, and 8 for the 3D) The difference between a half size I find with these shoes is very minor in the length and width, but a fairly large difference in the upper. The shoe is also more streamlined and not as flared out near the heal, which i don't like. This shoe looks not as stable as its predecessor, but has bigger "cushioning pods" (those white dots on the heel's midsole). The sole looks like they've gone back to the 1st XA pro, but the rubber feels better, and you don't get the "slippy salmons" phenomena on wet ground with these ones. Other than the fit issue, I gotta say almost everything about the shoe looks and feels the same, they may have some minor cosmetic changes, but the shoe hasn't really changed all that much. A final word on these shoes. I've had 4 pairs of these over the years, from its first model til this one, I love the fit once they're broken in (before breaking them in the arch area is quite a lot tighter), the look of the shoe and the comfort level. I still don't like how they feel for running, so i use road shoes or the XR mission for running, and keep these more for hiking and around town.

I picked up these Salomon shoes when I switched from hiking boots to trail runners. I had some good quality Asolo boots but I couldn't be happier with the switch to trail runners. My feet are way more comfortable in the Salomon's than they ever were in hiking boots. My feet are less sore and less prone to blisters over long distances in the trail runners. My typical pack base weight (just equipment without food or water) is around 15 pounds. The max weight I've carried when hiking with these shoes is about 32 pounds, and I had no issues with comfort. Another thing I really like about these trail runners (the non-GTX model) is the breathable mesh fabric they use. They really dry out fast even when they get completely soaked when fording creeks. Even my Asolo boots would talk forever to dry out just from getting sweaty from hiking all day, and they were GoreTex lined. My feet don't get hot or sweaty in these trail runners. I like the quick lacing system on these shoes too. The only thing about the lacing system on these particular shoes is the inside lacing loop at the toe of the shoe. For me, if I really cinch the laces down, that last lacing loop on the inside of the shoe puts some pressure on the top of my foot just behind my big toe. If you look at the photos of the laces, you'll see there is one lacing loop that is a lot lower on the shoe than the rest... that's the one I'm talking about. I don't think it's an issue with the shoe... probably just my feet, and as long as I'm careful not to lace the shoe up too tight, it's not a problem. As far as durability, these Salomons are holding up very well after more than 100 miles that I've hiked in them. I haven't been gentle with these shoes. I often hike on rough, rocky, and overgrown trails, so they take some abuse.Read more ›

I had the previous model and they served me well for a year and half . I work in a place that is scorching hot and gravel is everywhere. Difficult terrain to walk and very punishing on footwear of any kind. They are very comfortable and durable. Protects the ankle well although its low shoe. The ventilation is fantastic and they are feather light. Probably the best shoe of this kind and worth's every $. Very satisfied and I recommend them without any reservation.

Up front, let us make two points clear:

    * This review is not about how well the Salomon XA Pro 3D performs in running on trails; and
    * This review is about how well the Salomon XA Pro 3D shoe cushions shocks to the foot and knee when Salomon's OrthoLite insole is replaced with Sorbothane UltraSole Men's / Women's Insoles

I purchased these specific shoes because, over time and heavy use, I have completely worn down the meniscus in both knees, and no longer have the cushion that once I had, causing pain every time I take a step when I undertake certain activities, especially going down stairs or walking down a steep slope. Although I do not have prescription orthotics, I have been following specific non-prescription advice from a physician:

    1. No matter how lightly worn the shoes may be, even if they look brand new, replace your "daily" shoes at least once per year because the shock absorption materials within the shoes get compressed and less effective with use and time.

    2. Replace the insoles of each pair of new shoes with high shock absorption insoles right away.

Because trail running shoes are designed with an eye to the user's foot landing on uneven surfaces, shoes in that category generally have more shock absorption than shoes designed for use on smooth or paved surfaces.

A concomitant aspect of bad knees is that stooping to tie one's shoelaces (and then standing up again) becomes more of an issue than it was when the knees were more intact. Therefore shoes with a speed-lacing system are a definite plus for convenience.
