I always have this going any time we have a fire in the living room and it really helps with the dry feeling in the air. I love that it is sturdy and heavy so that my cats can't knock it down. It's also a breeze to refill, just takes two trips with pitcher full of water. No need to take anything apart to add water which reduces that chance of any water getting on my hardwood floors or on my table. I also actually love the sound from the little waterfall. The best benefit is that it is dishwasher safe! How easy can it get? Definitely love it!

This makes the 4th time I've purchased this model of humidifier. There are only so many ways to increase the relative humidity:

1. Heat water so that it evaporates and blow it into the room.
These are often called "warm mist" humidifiers.
This type is really inexpensive.
If tap water is used in this type, calcium deposits eventually junk up the works.
Since they have a heating element, they are not safe around children.
Because the water is evaporated, these units do not create "white dust" in the room.
(They leave all the minerals in the unit.)

2. Blow water through a filter that "wicks up" water.
These units are often called "cool mist."
As air moves through the filter, water evaporates and gets blown out into the room.
The amount of water evaporated is proportional to the amount of air that moves through
the filter. So, to get more humidity the fan speed has to be increased. On high, the
fan can be very loud. It's nearly impossible to over saturate the air because as the
humidity goes up, the air simply cannot pick up more water as it goes through the filter.
If tap water is used in this type, the filter eventually gets coated with dissolved minerals,
and essentially stops working. That means buying a new $12 filter every couple of weeks.
Most of these units have no idea if there is any water in the unit or if they are actually
working. i.e. the fan just keeps blowing, even though it isn't doing any good.

3. Atomize the water into droplets using an ultrasonic vibrator and blow the droplets into the air.

I love the design, I really do. So much so that I've had 4 of these. I like the simplicity of the design, and the fact that it's top-fill, which means I can bring a jug of water instead of carrying the tank back and forth. Why 1 star? Because each and every one of them only lasts about 6 months. I clean the parts regularly, install the pump correctly, but to no avail. They just give up on you. It's only the pump part that needs to be replaced, but Honeywell doesn't sell these parts. GRRR I tell you GRR. I think I may just go back to a tank and invest in a sharp plasma cluster.

DO NOT BUY!!!!!! I bought the first one last year and used it for about 4 winter months. Worked fine. Then, I stored it over the summer and took it out again for this winter. It broke down within a month, so it basically worked for 5 months. I thought, maybe it was a defective piece so I bought another one of the same humidifier. This time, it lasted 2.5 months and broke down. The light still turns on, but I think the motor just stops working. I maintained and cleaned both of them regularly but it made no difference, I guess. Despite only a 3 of 5 stars on the reviews, the only reason I bought this particular one was because I could just fill it up with a jug from the top instead of removing the water holder, taking it to the sink, filling it and bringing it back. It was very convenient, but as I realize now, what is the point if it does not last more than a few months. $50 down the drain, twice!!!! I experimented with this humidifier and I lost. Poor decision. DO NOT BUY!!!!!!!!

Bought this for my mom; everyone in her assisted living building wants to know where to get one because of the easy way to add water. You don't have to remove or lift a heavy container. Just use a cup, pitcher, etc to pour water into the top. There are no filters to replace, so you have no additional costs. We've had this for 2 winter seasons & I just plugged it in for this winter. Still working great.

the noise does disturb my sleep. I think if it were a constant noise then it would be fine, but sometimes the water noise changes and that disturbs my sleep. If you can sleep through anything, then don't give this another thought - buy it! It's so easy to fill, I bought a 2 gallon jug that I fill from my sink and then just pour it in the top and you're all set. The view window on the front shows you how much water is in there. Since the noise disturbs my sleep, I now know how much water to put in in the morning so it runs all day, then by the time I go to bed I turn it off for the night. It makes a huge difference for my asthma, even just running during the daytime.
