I bought this bar from Amazon, and my husband installed it for me. It is strong and does not bend in the middle, and the brackets work fine. However, this week the bar broke when I was at the top of a pull-up. I fell backwards onto the floor with great force, and took the brunt of the blow with my elbows, thus avoiding striking my head on the floor. The working out must have given me good bone mass, as my elbows and arms did not break, but were only bruised and bloodied.

However, the problem with the bar is this: you have to install it exactly as you see it in the product photo, which shows the man doing a chin-up at the right-hand side of the doorway. This way, when you slightly turn the bar as you pull up, the bar tightens. We had it installed the other way, so I was at the left of the doorway. When I'd pull myself up, I'd slightly loosen the bar, until eventually it fell from its brackets.

My husband does not recall a warning about this in the instructions, but he may have overlooked it. So please be careful with this bar. It's a good bar, as long as it is installed exactly as in the photograph. Also be aware that as the bar tightens with every use (when installed properly), you may want to loosen it periodically so it doesn't cause distortion by digging too hard into the door frame.

This kind of doorway bar unscrews to get wider and wider until it fits very tight in between the doorway. At the ends are rubber so the bar fits really tight. I now have a doorway in my basement that's 39.5" wide. It has been very hard finding a bar with this kind of design to stretch out and fit this wide doorway. I emailed J/Fit directly regarding the size of the bar. They said:

"Thank you for the inquiry. The gym bar will fit in your door, the more important question is your weight. Because of the extra length you are putting more pressure on the middle of the bar. It is a very strong bar and it should be screwed into the side door mounts so the pressure is really the issue that you will have to decide."

I was able to mount this in my doorway without the recommended side door mounts that were included with the bar. I weigh 200 lbs now and I have done about 40 pull-ups on the bar. Overall, I say great product. I also appreciate the grips that are preinstalled on the bar. They are not movable or adjustable, but it doesn't matter, they work and I like them. I do attempt to retighten the bar each time I use it just to be on the safe side. It seems to keep its tension and if I can tighten it down more its minimal.

I bought this bar over the other bars available here for two reasons: the review above said it could be held in place simply by friction and this bar can fit many doorways.

Of course, mounting brackets are provided, but do not seem necessary (then again, I'm not even close to 200 pounds.)

This bar feels quite solid. You spin it, and it telescopes into place. It takes many revolutions to extend even a small distance, so you can secure it pretty well into the doorway (good mechanical advantage! As in physics/engineering mechanical advantage.)

There are foam grips that are quite comfortable. They are sized perfectly for my hands. I suppose if you have small hands, you might not find these grips ideal, but they did a pretty good job of sizing this quite universally. The bar only extends from one end, though, so the grips will be off to the side. But what does that matter? You're not going to hit the door. Just do your pull ups and chin ups.

There might be some fancier models out there that will assist you with your push ups and sit ups (this one won't help you with push ups), but are you really going to take that thing down to do your sit ups and put it back up afterward?

I believe I am at least the sixth person to report that this bar bends.

I have metal studs in my apartment and I mounted the brackets with heavy duty self-drilling screws. As a result, the brackets aren't going anywhere but the bar is. Here's the thing: if you're 170-180 and you kip (use a jerking motion) to do pullups, the bar WILL bend (unless your mounting location is super narrow). If you're 200 like me and you do slow, controlled deadhangs, it WILL bend. If you're 200 and you do close-grip pullups or narrow grip lat pullups, it WILL bend. The only way you can guarantee this bar won't bend is if all of the following are true:

-Mounting location is less than 36" wide
-You are under 170 pounds
-You don't kip when you pull up
-You don't try to do any close/narrow grip pullups
-Bar is mounted

If all of those aren't true, buyer beware--it may last you just a week like mine did.

PS I found it DID need to be mounted. I have concrete floors in my place... can you imagine doing some kind of inverted ab crunch and having the bar slip? I tried getting by without mounting and it slid down immediately, despite tightening it down so well that the drywall started to crack.

Again, buyer beware: good idea, bad execution (except for the narrow range of characteristics enumerated above).
