I have had one of these timers operating my porch lights for a year and a half...no problems. A month ago I installed a different model (Defiant # 469 637) in a neighbor's house as we were unable to find the Woods 59020 locally. Big mistake. Let me say this: if you have difficulty programming the Woods timer, do not even consider trying to program the Defiant timer. There is no comparison at all. Once you get past a brief learning curve with the Woods timer it does become user-friendly and logical. For the Defiant timer, you better never lose the instructions.

Installation for either timer was easy for me because wiring is second nature for me. For the inexperienced person, the Woods timer would be the easiest to install. However, if the timer is being used as a 3-way switch (such as would be REQUIRED for controlling a lighting circuit from 2 different locations), then the Defiant timer or equivalent would be necessary. The Woods timer is ONLY for use as a single pole switch--meaning for use where only one switch controls a circuit. There may be more than one light on such a circuit, but all on/off operation is limited to one switch.

The Woods timer does not connect in any way to the (normally) white wire in the junction box. A white wire is typically the "neutral" wire, and as such it provides the return path to electrical ground back in the breaker panel. (By the way, turn off the correct breaker before working with wiring, and be aware that if numerous wires are in a series of ganged boxes there might be more than one hot wire in the junction box(es)). If you are replacing an existing single pole switch, within the junction box you should normally have 2 or more white (neutral) wires connected together. Leave them alone.

My 20 year old programmable light switch recently stopped working. I went to a local hardware store and bought a 21st century replacement and
discover I needed to hook up 3 wires to replace my 2 wire switch. I returned it to my hardware store and looked on the Internet for something that's
easier to install. I bought this switch because it was advertised as not needing a Neutral wire. This is a true statement, but the specs neglected to mention this switch needs a Ground wire to function. So I am disappointed I still need to use 3 wires to have something that does the same thing
that once needed only to use 2 wires.

Tried other timers and they failed so I returned them to HD. I learned they were not CFL or LED compatible so they would eventually be worthless. This timer truly is compatible and worked for me since I did not have a neutral wire. You do need to push the reset button after turning the power back on. If you don't it will keep tripping and turning off. I have 3 of these running outdoor coach (porch) lights and they have been working perfectly. Another thing to note is make sure you pay attention to the display. It must read AUTO in order to run the timed setting.

I bought and installed 2 of these timers. I like this product and will buy more if the need arises and I recommend it. Here's a summary of my experience with it:
The good:
1) This type of timer can be tiresome to program. The programming of this device was quite simple.
2) The fact that a neutral wire is not required is a big plus, making this timer suitable as long as there is
a ground wire available in the switch box.
3) It worked with my CFL and LED bulbs just fine.
4) There are no batteries to replace, unlike some similar products that don't require a neutral wire.
The minor bad aspects:
1) Because it depends entirely on the power in the switch box, it can't be programmed until it's installed. Some of the other brand timers I've installed, I've been able to program on my workbench, and then install them ready to go. The fonts on the display of this timer are small and tough to see, so programming it after it's installed can be a bit taxing on the eyes.
2) You can temporarily override the program (i.e. turn the light on during a period when the timer has it programmed off)keeping it in AUTO mode, by pushing the panel on the front of the timer. You can also indefinitely override the program by putting the timer into MANUAL mode.
The problem is that the design of the pushable front panel makes it very easy, and likely, for you to inadvertently put it into MANUAL mode when you want it to be in AUTO mode, and vice versa.
