Very few choices available for Dexron-VI ATF. This Valvoline is a true synthetic AT fluid. I bought 2 cases and performed the task of flushing my BMW's transmission and changing filter. The car only had 30K miles and yet the old oil drained out was black and totally contaminated. BMW claimed the oil on their original car is lifetime and never needs replacing. I totally disagree because right after I performed the fluid change, the shifting becomes crisper and smoother. It took 6 quarts including the filter change. But I did the flush twice because of the bad condition of the old fluids. I strongly suggest flushing the transmission after draining the fluid. Run it for a few days, then drain it again, then put in a new filter to complete a more thorough fluid change. This way, you will get more old fluids out because the converter holds quite a few quarts that unless you pull the transmission out for a rebuild, you will never be able to completely drain the system.

I strongly vouch for the product. Since my BMW uses the GM transmission and GM spec to use Dexron VI, this Valvoline is 100% compatible. You just can't go wrong with it. However, having said that, performing the fluid change has to be done right. Since there is no dipstick on the BMW, the fluid has to be filled under the car through a fill hole with the engine running and also at an optimal temperature to be able to get the correct amount into the transmission.

The only negative is the low flash point. If you read the data sheet from Valvoline, it states the flash point as 208C, which is quite low for a synthetic fluid.

If you drive a GM vehicle and are looking for the highest grade Dexron fluid, this I believe is the only, full-synthetic fluids with the most current Dexron VI specification, currently selling on Amazon as of this date. Other synthetic fluids make all kinds of claims, but none of them is rated to this new high standard. The price is very good too.

I have used this ever since it came out in all of my transmission changes both Ford and GM and it seems to be working fine. I do a partial change of the ATF fluid once a year (6 quarts), which is about every 20,000 miles. I now have 130,000 hard miles on a Yukon XL, occasionally towing and always fully loaded with tools. Only time will tell.

I used this to change out the ATF in my 2008 BMW X3 3.0si at 93,000-miles. The transmission now shifts MUCH smoother than before. Mine took almost 5-qts to drain and refill. The 2007-2010 US BMW X3's (E83 models) are equipped with a GM-GA6L45R automatic transmission and BMW recommends Dexron-IV ATF. This Valvoline Dexron-VI fits the specifications, and it is also one of the few full synthetic options on the market.

BMW says the ATF is a "lifetime fluid". I don't believe there is such a thing as a lifetime fluid. Now that I have seen what the original ATF looked like after 93,000 miles when I drained it out, I definitely don't believe in lifetime fluid...it was really dark and really in need of being changed. It's an easy job...go do it !

Remember that roughly half of the fluid will remain up in the transmission and torque converter, so most people drain and refill, then drive a few hundred miles, and then drain and refill again in order to get most of it changed out. Also, note the BMW process of having to top up the fluid level with the engine running to get the right quantity of fluid in the transmission...it's easy to mess that part up if you aren't used to doing it on other car brands. Read up on the process before you change your ATF on a BMW.

As part of 100k service for 2007 BMW 328i, I replaced transmission filter and drained and refilled 6 QT of this Valvoline Dextron VI fluid. Everything runs and shifts smooth. To be fair not many choices for Dextron VI, but this is best of what is available.

Update 10/2/2014: Transmission running smooth, no issues. Seems this is the best full synthetic DEXTRON VI transmission fluid.

update: 2/3/2015: Transmission still running smooth, no issues.

I have always had good luck with valvoline products. While my friends were using pennzoil and quakerstate and castrol and whatever and having motors go out and trannys rebuilt I had none of those problems using valvoline. Simply put their products do what they say they will.I noticed a difference right away after having my tranny fluid and filter changed. The truck was shifting smoother and faster than before.If you doubt what I say in this review try some valvoline products in your own vehicle. You will be glad you did.. An easy five stars for this product.

You can spend a bunch of money on Royal Purple Racing ATF... which doesnt hold the classification for Dex 6 (VI). Or you can buy this which is the best Dex fluide out there and is truly 100% Synthetic....

All Dexron-III licenses expired permanently at the end of 2006, and GM now supports only Dexron-VI fluids for use in their automatic transmissions, although fluids asserted by their manufacturers to meet Dexron-III standards continue to be sold under names such as Dex/Merc. These fluids are not regulated or endorsed by GM.
