First, a totally candid confession: I'm a classical musician who is deeply in love with Bach's compositions, as well as someone who is huge fan of Chris Thile's previous work. I was entirely too excited to listen to this release. In other words, my expectations were definitely high going into my first listen...

...and Chris Thile definitely did not disappoint!

In this disc are the first three of the six sonatas & partitas for violin (Sonata No. 1 in G minor, BWV 1001; Partita No. 1 in B minor, BWV 1002; and Sonata No. 2 in A minor, BWV 1003), and presumably there will be a second disc coming along with the other three (Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004; Sonata No. 3 in C major, BWV 1005; and Partita No. 3 in E major, BWV 1006.) It takes no small measure of guts and ambition to release a professional recording of *anything* Bach, let alone any of the "big three" solo compositions (six sonatas & partitas for violin, six cello suites, and partita for solo flute.)

Let's get the obvious out of the way - all of Bach's solo works are incredibly challenging to perform. The technical challenge of just playing the notes as they're written on the page ranges anywhere from formidable to breaking-out-in-a-sweat-just-thinking-about-it (I can only speak from experience in performing the cello suites, but it is sometimes almost comically apparent that they were written by a guy that was used to playing music with both hands and feet simultaneously!) Thile totally nails it - his characteristically crisp, lithe, and *rapid* finger-picking makes for an experience nothing short of spectacular in fast-paced pieces like the "Corrente" from Partita No. 1 in B minor.

Things I really love about this recording (there is no list of things I don't love):

*Glenn-Gouldian tempos in the slow movements, wonderfully drawn and pulled dramatic lines.

*Counterpoint is much more clear than a violin recording as a result of carefully sustained tones. This is particularly striking in the G minor Adagio and A minor Grave. The voice leading doesn't come through this clear very often, it's quite special.

*Polyphony in general is much less hindered than on the violin. Not having a curved bridge allows for 3 and 4 note chords to truly be voiced simultaneously. This is most clearly noticeable in the B minor Tempo di Borea. The flow of the many-voiced cadences sound completely new.

*It has to be said: the Double of the B minor Corrente . . . wow. And for that matter, the G minor Presto and A minor Allegro. BUT it's more than just notes, friends. These are highly *shaped* interpretations. No doubt about it.

*Every repeat is varied. As I performer I have always found this difficult (they're hard enough to play well [and in tune] as it is), and hearing thoughtfully constructed architecture here is really enjoyable.

Mr. Thile treats this music with the reverence that it deserves. Bach is one of those untouchable composers and every time his music is reified, it is a sacred occasion. This recording does due justice.

I can't wait for Volume 2 to come out. My mouth is watering at the thought of the Chaconne, the C Major Allegro assai, and E Major dance movements...

Chris Thile's technical prowess has long been established: The man can really make the mandolin sing, whether playing dulcet, sustained passages that seem to beautifully hang in the air, or producing incredibly fleet-fingered runs where every note rings clear and true. I've expressed some frustration in the past that his technical gifts can sometimes overshadow the context they function within: For example, his band the Punch Brothers are remarkable in nearly every way (technique, arrangements, dynamics), but sometimes seem to get hampered by somewhat diffuse, unfocused songwriting.

I've been excited about this album for some time -- really ever since I heard Thile dueting with Bela Fleck on a 3-Part Invention on Fleck's "Perpetual Motion" album. The Sonatas and Partitas should be a great vehicle for Thile's unique touch on the instrument--his unrivaled clarity and precision. And these recordings are largely successful: Thile makes wise choices as to tempi and dynamics (neither of which are particularly specified in Bach's scores), executes the music beautifully, and approaches the material with a palpable mix of respect and enthusiasm that is refreshing. The slower movements in particular are lovely, with Thile extracting a warm, almost harpsichord-like tone (but with out that instrument's inherent tinniness) from his mandolin.

Edgar Meyer, an artist whose own music doesn't do much for me, does a really nice job as producer, keeping things clean and elegant, and helping to make these interpretations genuinely musical -- not just technical grandstanding. That said, a few issues did creep into the picture for me. Really, just two: First off, some of the tempi on the faster pieces are a hair TOO fast.
