Sony has a knack for getting it right most times in providing the best bang for buck.
This system is perfect for CD lovers (like me) with blue tooth / smartphone streaming fans (my better half).

Purchase Background:
Spent a lot of time missing my old Philips amp from the 90's when it finally gave way after 2 decades.
Nothing could replace the tonal purity of a CD played end to end (think Dark Side of the Moon!)
I tried living with a portable bluetooth speaker for some months but the output never felt full enough.
This little piece of tech excellence has solved all that.

Some key features:
- Excellent Power - enough to light up a party in a 15'x20' room, which suits most urban (and probably suburban) situations. The sound characteristics become truly bright and b*llsy when the volume exceeds 20 (max 30)
- Bluetooth streaming does not cut the song level and the output remains constant, unlike some portable speakers
- Has simple Bass and Treble adjustment which perform equalizer functions well enough
- Size is perfect for window sills / shelves / table tops / media units etc
- Good sound quality across a variety of genres - Rage against the Machine/Johnny Cash/Bach/Miles Davis/Katy Perry/Zumba Music/Dire Straits to name a few of the many styles we listen to
- All functions can be accessed from the main console so no worry if the remote gets lost, unlike many other similar units
- Sony chat support is very effective (though not really needed as the setup is very simple)

**Note** (BLUETOOTH RELATED)
The pairing of iPhone with Bluetooth may seem confusing as the device is not immediately visible on the first pairing.

What you need to know: connections on the back are not what you might expect. I'll post a photo of the back so you can see this.
I plan to run longer speaker wires, so I was not thrilled when this arrived and saw that the speaker and antenna connections are some very small plugs. That means I'll have to splice the speaker wires and I can't use a standard antenna if I get poor reception when I take it to the store where I plan to use it.
Otherwise, my initial impression is positive. The sound quality is really pretty good and volume is adequate for background music or small rooms. Without reading instructions, I navigated tuning and saving some presets, playing a CD. I did have to read the short instructions to pair with my Samsung Galaxy Note 3, but that went quickly and I was able to stream Dolores In A Shoestand by E.S.T. through my Amazon Prime account. Next, I copied an MP3 track to a USB drive, slapped it in and got it to play. I've not tried the rear 3.5mm input jack (a standard, thanks!) or the front headphone jack.
I've added another image so you can see that the speaker grille can be easily removed to reveal the two drivers. This also illustrates the faux woodgrain finish on the speaker boxes.
Bottom line, my initial impression is that this system can do a decent job of reproducing music from a variety of sources. Assuming it proves durable, it seems to be a good value.

I just set this Sony CMT-SBT100 system up for my dad in his garage. We are both really impressed by the sound this system puts out...excellent quality and enough bass/treble adjustments to get the job done. The receiver and both speakers feel very well made and are compact enough to fit on top of his work bench. I spent a good amount of time reading customer reviews on this product and was impressed with all of the high scores it received. I have no gripes about the system itself but wanted to point out one unfortunate disappointment for iPod users out there who are considering purchasing this (as we were/did):

* You can forget about connecting your iPod Classic/Nano/Touch/etc. via a USB cable. This was the primary intention for my dad as he is not tech-savvy enough to deal with Bluetooth/wireless connectivity. After several failed attempts at connecting various iPods with various USB cords, I decided to read the manual and see if I was missing something. Come to find out, this system will ONLY recognize music files in MP3, WMA, or AAC formats. I probably should have looked into this further before purchasing, but I just assumed "oh, you can connect a USB device to it, cool..." and thought nothing of it. Since we import all of our CDs in the Apple Lossless codec (.M4A) to get the best sound quality, none of the songs on our iPods can be read by the unit.

Obviously, the easiest workaround is to simply connect the iPod via AUX IN and play it that way. This definitely will solve the playback ability issue, but will also render the remote/button functions useless when playing an iPod. At the end of the day, I would give the entire unit 5-stars for its sound and build quality, but I feel like in 2013/14 a speaker system advertising "USB playback" needs to support more than 3 file formats...especially when 99% of those USB devices are going to be iPods anyways.

In the market for a smaller bookshelf style music system, but you don't want to break your savings? Enter the Sony one here. It's a small shelf system with 50 watts of power, CD, AM/FM, USB, Bluetooth, and NFC. In fact, it's pretty much one of the few if not only shelf systems that has bluetooth and NFC integrated. With the rise of smartphones becoming our music storage and playback, this feature is welcome.

The system looks very nice, with a brushed metal (it's plastic, but looks good) old school yet modern look to the receiver portion. No dock for iPod, but it has a USB port that I plugged my Walkman into which worked fine. The port also has 2.1 amp charging capability, so you can even charge an iPad with it. Came with a full sized remote that controls everything...but there is one glaring omission. No eject button for the CD drawer, which was odd. CD player takes a few seconds to read a disc, but I hardly play CDs nowadays, and even when I do, the wait is not unbearable. The Bluetooth and NFC worked great with my Z2 Tablet, and Z3v Xperia phone.

Sound is very good, with ample power to drive the speakers, though be warned, you will not be able to change them as the inputs in the back of the unit are proprietary. AM/FM tuner works great too. You get a 3.5 headphone jack and another 3.5 input in the back too. There is a white LED light that is not visible in the pics. It is similar to the Sony Bravia and DVD players from a little while back. It pulses when you use the remote and it receives a command, giving you acknowledgement it got the signal. It is very upscale looking, but it is very bright in a darkened room. Thankfully, you can turn it off at night with the remote.

Compared to other bookshelf stereo systems, this one is really the best bang for the buck.
