This is just a quick note to get some feedback going about this new product.

1) It came all the way from Hong Kong in less than a week.
2) There is no CD-Rom driver disk supplied as stated, BUT I really prefer this as I'd rather them save the money wasted on supplying one that's usually outdated anyway. I just went to the Huion website ( [...] )(the K58 page), and downloaded the driver (7MB) and the .pdf of the user manual.
3) One of the main reasons that I chose this product is that there were a lot of complaints about other (similar) products not working properly with Windowz 8. (I'm one of the suckers wasting eons trying to get everything I had installed on Vista x64 and Win 7 x64 to work on my highly customized [to look and work like Windowz 7] installation of Bill Gates latest social experiment in finding out what people will put up with.) (Like an operating system that's too big for tablets, and to cumbersome for a desktop.)
***Anyway, Huion's drivers installed on Win 8 without any problem - I didn't even have to use the compatibility troubleshooter.
4) Although there are no hotkeys or softlinks on this tablet there are hotspots in the corners that are programmable in the GUI that the driver installs. There is also a soft keypad, I assume for use with a tablet. The keypad works okay, just don't expect to type War and Peace on it, as it's tricky to use. I haven't programed any hotspot functions yet, but I'll edit this once I do if anybody else hasn't posted about them.
5) Drawing: I opened Adobe Illustrator and it immediately recognized the tablet and offered a choice of tool types and options for them. The tablet does provide data about the pen angle and rotation as advertised, i.e.

This is a good tablet so far, though I did have to adjust some settings so that the pen didn't leave a "tail", when lifted from the tablet. Most programs, as well as the drivers, can adjust so this stops happening, but I found it annoying that the default settings left a tail. Other than that, it's a good tablet for the price, very sensitive, has a work surface that feels good- not too smooth, not too matte, and comes with four extra standard pen tips. The only thing I could ask for, were different TYPES of tips, like felt, small tip, large tip, etc. The stylus has worked quite well, and doesn't need to be charged for very long, which is an amazing improvement over pens that take batteries, or paying $100+ more dollars for a tablet with a pen that doesn't need to be charged. HIGHLY recommend this model for people who need a budget tablet, or a "beater" tablet. (Ie; one for your kids/ teenager/ travel.) I've had tablets on the very low and high ends, and this is probably the best balance between the two that I have ever seen, in terms of value for the money.

The Huion K58 is a simple yet effective drawing tablet. Because it's so affordable, it's a great option for beginners and professionals who don't need a lot of features. The K58 has really good specs as far as the resolution and pressure levels. The pen does not require a AAA battery like some other tablets. You can charge the pen with an included USB cable that plugs into the pen. There is also a wireless model, the W58, but the pen is not rechargeable.

The only negative thing I can say about it is that the surface is smooth compared to other tablets I have used which have a coarse surface that mimics paper. Some people prefer a smoother surface, so that's not really a flaw in the tablet. Just a personal preference.

I have video reviews of the K58 on YouTube you can watch to get a feel for how the tablet works when making art on the computer.

While it is cheaper than a similarly sized Wacom tablet, it has a bunch of quirks you should be aware of. The pressure sensitivity is not what I'd like right out of the box. Maybe I need to dig in my application settings and tweak it a little bit, but as-is its pressure readings are either full on or none at all.... it's difficult to create a gradually thickening line. Instead it jumps from hair-fine to maximum width. It also needs a tap of the pen on the tablet to turn it back on if it has gone to sleep. If you take a break from a project and come back, turning it on in this manner will almost certainly create an unwanted mark on your artwork. It's easily corrected, but it'd be nice to just have a button click do the same thing. All in all, if you're tired of being held hostage to Wacom's prices, this is a nice alternative, but it's certainly not equal.

Came with everything advertised. Had to download drivers from their site and installed them before plugging in the tablet. So far it works pretty well with Gimp on Windows 7. I have not had a chance to try it with Linux, so I will update the post when I have a chance to do so.

The only issue I have had is that the driver seems to unload itself if the laptop goes to sleep with the tablet plugged in. When it wakes up, the basic functions still work, but pressure sensitivity is gone. Don't know if this is a Huion driver issue, or if Windows grabs the device with it's own driver upon awaking before the Huion driver grabs the tablet. I'll continue experimenting with this tablet and update if there are any show-stoppers.
