I'm a total amateur when it comes to home DIY but installing these was a breeze. I went from a single light fixture to 6 recessed lights in my living-room. Every assembly worked and the trims were in perfect condition.

I already had a light fixture in the area where these were installed so I had a switchable electrical source in the ceiling.

Here is some advice for any beginners like me, where the installation runs perpendicular to the direction of the joists:

1) Use a stud finder to find the displacements of the joists from each end of the run, along with the separation of the joists (in my case 16").
2) On paper, work out the desired can separation such that none of the cans coincide with any joists - if I had done this first of all I would have saved myself a lot of backache and pencil marks on the ceiling!
3) Drill small pilot holes at the center of each desired can location. Clip the end off a small coat hanger and bend it such that it ends with a 2" section. Stick the section through each pilot hole and make sure you can fully rotate it (it should do if you did section 2 correctly).
4) Use a 3-7/8" hole saw. A 4" hole saw is too big, the lights are 4" including the trim, but the cans themselves are 3-7/8", I wish I'd known this in advanced as I bought a 4" hole saw and ended up cutting the holes by hand.
5) Use a flexible drill bit to drill through the joists without having to cut up the ceiling. Something like this Greenlee 09 03 54B DVersiBIT Combination 54 Inch (although I had bad luck with that particular bit).
6) I had to buy some larger wire-nuts as the ones included are too small for 12-gauge wire.

Obviously none of the above address any of the safety requirements when working with electrics.

We needed lights for our 25' X 12' living room and loved the idea of recessed lighting. Unfortunately, anyone who has walked into Home Depot or Lowes knows that these kits, especially when used with LED lights, can cost some major dough. So, we went to Amazon to see what I could find for a good price.

We just got everything wired up and turned on yesterday and I must say that I am VERY pleased with results. Despite the fact that these are a low price, they seem to be pretty darn awesome in combination with the LED lights we got (which were sold separately) .

A few notes for anyone who is going to DIY with these lights:

1.) I made the mistake of not ordering the 3 7/8" hole saw when I got this. I figured I'd run to Home Depot and grab one... Well, turns out that a 3 7/8" hole saw is a rather rare item and almost NOBODY carries it. So, on a whim, I got the next closest one down - the 3 5/8" hole saw. I don't know if it was luck or what, but the cans JUST fit inside that hole! So, if you run into the same trouble of finding the 3 7/8" you can go as low as the 3 5/8", but I strongly recommend that you do NOT go up to the 4" hole. You only have about 1/4" lip left if you go that far.

2.) If I could take 1/2 star off for this, I would - for some reason. Forgive my lack of the correct lingo here, but when I've purchased kits before, there are these small black 'clips' that help 'pinch' the wires and hold them inside the box. These kits don't have them. As a result, you'll find the wires constantly sliding in/out when you're pushing them into the hole. They are the smallest, cheapest little additions to these kits and I'm surprised they didn't come with them. A minor flaw in what is otherwise, a great deal.

Installed these lights with LED bulbs (Sunthin dimmable 5watt GU10 LED, $9.50 on Amazon), comes with the template you need to cut the holes which makes it easy for installation. I installed with Romex 12-2 Yellow cables and along with the drywall jab saw I bought everything cost under $18.00 per light (excluding the LED bulb). Every light worked out of box with no issues. The only issue is the wiring nuts included in the package are way too small so I bought new ones to accommodate my wiring.

Another tip, if you use LED bulbs and the lights are on a dimmer do not use one that has the indicator light on the dimmer. That will cause the LED lights to flash intermittently.

Overall the lights look great and with the tilting it works great as accent lighting as well. I would recommend.

Ordered these and had them installed in the living room and family room. They work well. I would say you need at least 6 in a 15x20 room to light it up sufficiently. They would work great for accent lighting on a picture, painting or mantle too.

Pro's - Inexpensive but still robustly built
- Template worked great for cutting into ceiling
- Junction box big enough for parallel wiring with 12/2 wire

Con's - The wiring inside the light is very small gage which makes wiring to the large 12/2 wiring difficult. I could have mitigated this by using 14/2 wire.

For reference, we used the Feit 8 Watt R20 LED Dimmable Flood light bulbs and the Lutron Diva dimmable light switch. We installed 8 lights in a kitchen that is 15ft x 10ft. 8 lights at 8W/light appear to create the right level of illumination for 150SF.
