Our 75 lb black lab has thick, all-black nails that are very hard. He hated having them cut, and we could never see the quick. Grinding his tough nails takes a long time; but we have him lie down, and he relaxes and sometimes sleeps right through it. His nails are in great shape, and the grinder lets me round the edges rather than ending up with sharp edges after cutting.

PROS: No more worrying about cutting into the quick, and it is easy to get the angle you want. 2 speeds for fast shortening and then slower finish work. Fairly quiet. After acclimating to the noise, our dog sleeps through the trim. Grinds fairly quickly. The light makes it easy to see what we are doing. We use rechargeable batteries, and they last through a couple trims. Grinding strips last through a couple trims and are easy and inexpensive to replace. The cover over the strips has a hole large enough for fairly large nails, and the cover contains a lot of the nail dust as it grinds off.

CONS: Grinding takes longer than clipping. Our dog's hard nails take about 15 minutes per paw. The grinding strips slip up and down the post, and they will stop rotating unless you use a light touch. We just remove the cover to give access to the entire strip as it slips up and down, although that means none of the nail dust is retained inside the cover. Grinding creates a lot of very fine dust. Removing the cover also makes it easier to hold the grinder at the angle you want and where you need it, and you no longer have to try to trim the nail through a hole. You have to remove the cover anyway to replace the grinding strips. The cover cracked a little when removed although not so badly that it can no longer be used.Read more ›

I did quite a bit of looking around for the best option in this category, and this seems to be it. If you prefer a corded model with more power, then most definitely I'd suggest going with Conair's corded Pet Nail Grinder instead.

Seems to work pretty well, although the link to the online video did not work as provided on the packaging. I had to go to their web site, and hunt for the video showing this item in action. It does tend to heat up rather quickly while in use, but that's just the nature of the beast. The light definitely helps to see where the "Quick" is within the nail, but with very dark colored nails, it doesn't help as much. I'd suggest getting a set of Rechargeable AA Batteries at the same time, rather than going through Lots of Alkalines. Good Luck!

This works just as expected. The grinding wheel has a cover worth different size openings to accommodate different nail sizes. This had made the dog's nails much smoother and there was little risk of hitting her nerve.

I dropped a star since the construction feels pretty cheap and the noise. The plastic body doesn't come together all that well at the battery mount. The noise from just the motor is louder than necessary. It was a bit surprising to hear because being for dogs I would think there would be an effort to keep the product quieter.

This is much easier way to trim your pups nails. it took a while for us to get her used to the sound of the grinder. But she is not afraid of the way the file feels on her nails. The file gives me much more control over the length of her nails than the clippers ever did. The files especially useful for split nails.

This one works really fast, I would say I spend about 10-20 seconds per nail to get them down to the right length. I find I need to replace the grinding bands after 2-3 nail trimming sessions. The one negative is that I wish the bands would last a little longer.
