I'm not against stripping down the instruments, but did they have to take the melodies with them? I spent most of the album waiting for some hook or riff to latch onto and it never happened. And do we really need demos of acoustic based songs? From listening alone, I coudn't tell if I was hearing the demo or the finished track.Thank god for the live material. Plus, I struggle getting the CDs in and out their sleeves which actually won't be posing much of a problem from this point on.

I found this album (I purchased the vinyl) to be very good from start to finish. Now don't get me wrong I love the more electric stuff but as a nice change of pace this is GREAT. But if your a MSP fan you knew this album was coming so anyone who doesn't like it or says it's not a god disc will hopefully be ready for the next one....as for me I found the songs great for just sitting and listening almost like a book is being read to you and with alot of great guests on board ( Cate Le Bon to name 1) very pleasing to the ear!

The first of two new releases, the Manics go acoustic for this one - with great success. Nearly every song is a classic. The lyrics are very dark on this album, although it doesn't detract from the music. The Manics have once again delivered an album that blows away most other "alternative" acts out there today. Highly recommended.

I've loved the Manics for years and a follower of all their albums and songs, and had the enjoyment of seeing them in Denver a while back during the "Plague Lovers" tour. This is a stripped down album, mainly unplugged, to give a very different and unique sound to their collection. There are more guest singers including Richard Hawley for "Rewind the Film" the title track. There is an amazingly haunting and beautiful instrumental tune on here called Manorbier. "3 Ways to Despair" possibly the best track on here and rates highly in the Manic's amazing collection. I also enjoyed the "I Miss the Tokyo Skyline." This album is so unlike previous albums, and i can't say it is my favorite by far, but highly worth owning and having and I continue to enjoy listening. The second disc is one I haven't gone through yet- I believe they are live tracks and outttakes.

No, it's not what you would have expected from the Manics, or what I expected, but it is a brilliant release. If you're a fan, consider that every Manics album has its own sound, its own look and its own feel. They're always true to themselves, but they dress their sound (and themselves) differently for every new venture, exploring, creating and reimagining their world. If you're expecting Send Away The Tigers or, going further back, Motown Junk, sure, you'll be disappointed. If you look forward to every new Manics album with a sense of wonder as to what they're going to get into this time? Then it's another perfect release. My only, only, only fault is that I wish there hadn't been such a reliance on guest vocalists. Hawley is okay, but the demo of the song is so much better. Other than that, a terrific outing, sublime and gripping.

For some reason this release gets a lot of negative comments. I don't understand why. It's a bit different, but then each Manics release is a bit different from the previous one. Nicky Wire's lyrics on this are some of his best. "Show me the Wonder" is a tune you can't help but dance to. "As Holy as the Soil (That Buries Your Skin)" and "Running out of Fantasy" are two of the best tracks and the opening "This Sullen Welsh Heart" is thoughtful and brutal. Perhaps not a CD to introduce someone to the Manics, but definitely a release all Manics fans should appreciate. Doing something different is a brave move in the music world, something the Manics have never been fearful of, and each time the do it, they prove their worth.
