I already had this on VHS, if you remember what that is. I just had to get it again on DVD. You can see how incredibly excited the other musicians, and especially Bruce, are to be playing with Roy. That voice never faltered. The way he just belts out songs like "In Dreams" with no apparent effort has always astonished me. That's why I call him "The Voice", and did so long before the TV series ever premiered. What most folks don't know is that he wrote, if not all, most of the songs. Roy Orbison was one of the top musician/songwriters in American music history. More people still need to here and see him. Hopefully they have a discerning ear to appreciate the vast amount of talent he possessed.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. The mix of performers is outstanding. Where else would you ever find background girl singers like Bonnie Raitt, k.d. lang, and Jennifer Warnes, not to mention Bruce Springsteen? The choice of songs is wonderful, all of Roy's hits. But the thing that appeals most to me is the jazz component, i.e., the musical improvisation of these fantastic guys and their instruments interspersed among the vocal renditionings. And then there are shots of the well-known people in the audience. Wow! Superb!!

One of Roy's last - and best - concerts. The use of black-and-white makes you feel you're right there in the club.

Almost rated it 4-1/2 stars since "Blue Angel" (cut by Cinemax) wasn't on it, but the balance carries the vote. Springsteen is great as #2 vocalist, and kd lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Raitt singing backup? R U Kidding me?

BTW, just to absorb James Burton - the Master of the Telecaster - playing again alone makes it worth watching and listening...especially on the elongated versions of "Go, Go, Go", "Mean Woman Blues", and "Pretty Woman" .

I already had the CD and loved it. The DVD is even better! The added excitement of watching the performers makes the music come alive. I defy you to sit still while watching this. Completely aside from watching a legend at his best, the backup performances are worth the price of the DVD. A highlight is watching Springsteen dueling guitars with the great T Bone Burnett on a couple of the longer cuts. The "backup girls"- k d lang, Bonnie Raitt, Jennifer Warnes- leave you wanting more. It's clear all the performers, even the dour Elvis Costello were having great fun; Springsteen never stops grinning.

If you're unfamiliar with the late Roy Orbison, this album made shortly before he dies at an early age will bring you aboard his fan ship. If you are already a fan then this album will fully corroborate your decision. It was filmed in a smoke-filled night club with Roy, a large violin-laden orchestra and a supporting cast of epic proportions including Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, k.d.lang, Bonnioe Raitt, et. al. The song canon is fantastic and Orbison and his minions perform exquisitely. l can't praise it enough.

Roy Orbison Black and White Night and The Eagles’ Hell Freezes Over are the only 2 DVDs I have found that totally take advantage of my DTS 7.1 home theater system. You have to select the DTS mode if you have an amplifier with that option and if you have 5.1 or 7.1 speaker configuration. You also need a bass speaker. With 8 good speakers in a DTS 7.1 system you will be totally impressed.

A wonderful evening of Roy's best songs, surrounded by some great musicians/admirers. If there is a negative, it is the lack of interaction of Roy and the band with a)the audience, b)each other. There wasn't even the obligatory introduction of the band members. While the delight was obvious on all their faces, a little more of a "live" feel would have been nice. If you are an Orbison fan(who isn't), this is a great show. There are others but I like this one for the band behind him.

99% of the time these anthology shows filled with "guest artists" are okay, but they lose the flavor and texture of the original songs. This album happily falls in that other 1%. Roy is in great voice. Thankfully he reprises "Crying" with KD Lang. If that won't break your heart, you're stone cold for sure. Every song is done perfectly. Great album. Belongs in every rock collection.
