Transitioning to new foods:
Transitioning can result in fewer digestive issues and better acceptance of a new pet food.
- Mix both the current food with the new food
- Gradually decrease the amount of the current cat food while increasing the amount of the new cat food
- Continue to do this over a 7-day period
- Cats who are finicky, older or have medical conditions may take 10+ days to fully transition.

We adopted our cat in October and for months after we adopted her she had terrible diarrhea, we're talking completely liquid. We were feeding her the same food (Kirkland brand) she'd been getting at the rescue center and she had no other symptoms (lethargy, etc.) so at first we thought it was just the stress of being in a new environment. After a couple of weeks with no improvement, we took her to the vet and found out she had a parasite. But after two week-long rounds of medication, her diarrhea was as bad as ever. She also had some scabs on her neck and near her ears that made us suspect a food allergy.
The vet gave us some of the Science Diet dry food for gastrointestinal health and some Fortiflora. I had also read that canned pumpkin helped diarrhea in cats. So for about a month we were giving her the Science Diet i/d, a packet of Fortiflora and a tablespoon of pumpkin. That seemed to get things under control but if we missed a day of the pumpkin or Fortiflora she would have diarrhea the next day.Then she seemed to lose interest in eating the pumpkin altogether. We tried switching her to a grain-free cat food from a natural pet care store in our city, but she's very picky and wouldn't touch it. We tried pricey grain free wet foods, but she again turned up her nose (we were warned when we adopted her that she would not eat wet food but thought it was worth a shot).
We went to Petsmart to find a grain free food but didn't feel great about most of the brands (Blue Buffalo, Purina, etc.). Then we saw this Science Diet grain free food. I had read mixed things about Science Diet and had been hoping to find a different brand, but when I looked at the ingredient list on this food, I was sold.Read more ›
