Now that I've got the HiRise assembled with an Apple 1 meter Lightning cable, I'm very happy with it. The parts fit together well and the stand looks sharp in my opinion. My iPhone and case fit perfectly into this stand. Having said that, allow me to share with you my experiences so that I may save you some time and frustration:

You may be tempted to purchase a 2 meter lightning cable to make it easier to plug this into an outlet - don't! I've learned that the HiRise was released a few months BEFORE Apple released the 2 meter cable. The 2 meter cable is thicker than the 1 meter cable that comes with your iPhone or iPad mini and the 2 meter cable will not fit into the groove underneath the base of the HiRise - trust me. If you're looking to extend your lightning cable, consider something like the Monoprice USB 2.0 A Male to A Female Extension available here at Amazon.

Assembly of the HiRise was pretty straight forward. Just make sure you know which of the three clips you need based on which case you use (or if you don't use a case at all). It can be a challenge to get the clip back out once it's inserted into the metal front support. I needed to get it back out and did so successfully by wrapping the support in a towel (so as not to mar the metal), securing it in a vice, and tapping the clip out using the included hex tool along with a hammer.

Customer Support was helpful and responded to my first email within 24 hours and subsequent emails within an hour or two.

So all in all, I'd recommend the HiRise. I removed one star for the lack of warning about not using a 2 meter cable. Twelve South told me that will be reflected at their website very soon; perhaps it's been taken care of already.

I actually purchased this product to use with an iPad Air based on other reviews suggesting this was possible. Well, as far as the larger iPad Air, while the stand works ok, the iPad is a bit wobbly when I actually try to use it on the stand....HOWEVER, that is not the way this product is sold. It is billed specifically as an iPhone/iPad mini stand. Now in that regard, this little stand is *extremely* well thought out. It can be adjusted to fit all kinds of cases (heights, thicknesses, etc.) really easily; it even has very clean holders to route your cable neatly under the device and out the back of the stand. It even comes with the allen wrench needed to make adjustments. Two thumbs up for me.

When used with a phone or mini, your device will be stable and there will be no problem using it.

I don't write a lot of reviews, and certainly this product does not need another positive review, but I need to chime in. You would think that charging your iPhone is a simple task, but when you have a wife and two kids, each with their own iproducts, finding a charging cable and/or adapter can become a contentious and stressful event. I had an old dock for my old iPhone 4s, which was wired to my bedroom TV. I would plop my phone into the dock with the case attached every night before bed so that it was fully charged in the morning. Because the new iPhone lightning cable is not compatible with the dock, I needed to find another solution. I purchased an adapter, but I needed to remove the case, which was an annoyance. For a while, I simply plugged it directly into the outlet behind the nightstand, but the wire would always slip off the night stand and fall behind, and I would have to go searching for it. Another annoyance.

So I did some online research and came across the HiRise, which made charging simple again. When it arrived, I opened the box and assembled the pieces within five minutes. The HiRise works as promised. I have a Spigen Tough Armor case, and I used the middle size extender. My phone fits perfectly without the need to remove the case. The rubber pad on the bottom keeps the base in place very well. Visually, the unit looks great sitting on top of my oak night stand. Although relatively costly, the HiRise appears to be one of the few products that does the simple job of charging nicely and conveniently, and looks good doing it.

I purchased a genuine HiRise at the Apple Store and it is just great. No problems, other than taking a few minutes to assemble (need a little coordination to place the four small screws in the base). A 4 Star rating for the genuine product!

A few other notes to differentiate the counterfeit vs. genuine product if you do order from Amazon (I would select ordering from TwelveSouth directly through Amazon):

The Shipping weight as listed on the product info page is 12 oz. My postal scale measured 12.5 oz for the real thing vs. 14.9 oz for the counterfeit product which is heavier. Most of the weight difference is in the base. The front support of the genuine article has screw holes that are closed when looking through the bottom of the piece. With the counterfeit front support screw holes, you can see light right though the other other end of the hole. The counterfeit box was missing a sheet of die cut stickers.

The counterfeit is very good and until you can compare each one side-by-side, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference--except for the fact that the angle of the rear support is cut wrong, providing no support to the back of the phone.

Nov. 5th Original Comments:

I just received the product today. After assembly I found that the rear support did not support the iPhone 6, or for that matter would not support anything. The problem is that the metal supports that are connected to the base are not cut at the same angle, so there is a large air gap that is created between the back of the phone and the support.

This seems to be the same issue as reported in some of the other negative reviews (lack of support, only the connector supporting the phone).Read more ›
