Since this show is getting such horrible reviews on IMDB I thought I'd bump it up a bit here since this is where you can watch it. Or you can watch it for free from SyFy.com if you have a TV provider like Xfinity or one of the many other ones across the country.

This is SyFy. I don't compare it to Firefly but it has a similar feel. They deal with human issues as a whole on this series, with good acting, almost all characters are shades of grey and even then those shades come out on the darker side. There are good people, but they have to do bad things. There are bad people who step up to do the right thing when necessary. Then there are the Volge who just want war.

This is a very progressive show.

One of my favorite elements of the show is the ending montages. They have haunting covers of songs most of us know and love, wrapping up the triumphs and defeats each episode brings to our characters.

And there are a ton of WTF! moments. This show keeps you on your toes.

3502 BCE - Indogene scientists discover that a star is on a collision course their solar system, the Votanis System. It takes them decades to convince the governments of the other planets that destruction is coming. Fortunately, obliteration is not immediate, because they've first got to invent the propulsion and suspended animation systems to take an Ark Fleet millions of light years away, to the third planet orbiting a yellow dwarf star in a spiral galaxy.

3001 BCE the Ark Fleet departs and the Votanis System is shortly after destroyed. The Ark inhabitants now have no home to return to. 5000 years later, Earth scientists first detect the approaching fleet. It arrives in 2013.

At first, it looks like there may be peaceful co-existence, but there are too many aliens (Votans) who want a new home. There is too much fear in the humans and too much mistrust all around. After a human assassinates the Votan ambassador to the United Nations in 2023, the horrific Pale Wars begin. By the time an armistice is declared in 2031, much of Earth has been terraformed.

There's still a lot of mistrust, but there's one place where humans and Votan have patched together a mostly working peace, the city of Defiance, erstwhile St. Louis. In 2046, scavengers Nolan and his daughter Irisa arrive at Defiance, and our tale begins.

This is rollicking good science fiction though it strays into mysticism, which is not so much my cup of tea. I was surprised to find out that Nolan is actually Joshua Nolan. Everybody calls him "Nolan", including Irisa, so I assumed it was his first name!

When Nolan, the jaded scavenging veteran at the heart of the new Syfy series Defiance, strides from the Lawkeeper's office early in the pilot episode, seasoned viewers will recognize the streetscape. With storefronts built of reclaimed materials and stacked cargo compartments, it distinctly resembles the Eavesdown Docks from Joss Whedon's Firefly. And for good reason, since both shows shows channel the same American frontier mythology.

Frederick Jackson Turner's seminal 1893 essay, "The Significance of the Frontier in American History," identified the idea of frontier as the defining trait of American society. Crossing the invisible line from society to wilderness allows individuals to shrug off confining Euro-American stipulations of hierarchy, subjection, religion, and money. But Turner lamented that the closing of the American frontier, according to the 1890 census, marked the end of American pioneer fervor.

Firefly, like Star Trek before that, rejects that closing by moving the frontier line off Earth's surface. New experiences and dynamic individualism remain for us to discover "out there." But Defiance alters that tack, suggesting that the movement of new species into our domain can open new frontiers where we are; the American pioneer ethos can be reinvested where we are. We need only destroy existing civilization to get there.

Defiance's frontier myth doesn't need unpacked; creator Rockne O'Bannon splashes it across the screen in vibrant CGI Technicolor. Nolan's swagger, the city's ad hoc justice, and the contrast between settled urbanity and the vibrant Badlands, all bespeak classic cowboy heroes like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood.

The pilot episode is decent and got me interested, although the ending was a bit contrived. After several episodes into this season, I am not going to watch any more. You have literally seen the plot to every episode before. It is just recycled material crammed into the Defiance universe. My other big problem is the aliens. You have vampire look-alikes; savages who sound Russian, and bald-headed nerds, and 2 species of harry-type creatures. However, the problem is that they all "act human" and interact with each other so well, it seems improbable that they came from halfway across the galaxy and from different planets. And, this is not a show using alien makeup to say anything profound about race relations or other social issues. There is really no point in the "aliens" being "alien" instead of just other human factions.

Then there are the abundance of clichés and tropes that ruin anything somewhat original in this series. You have the hardened gunslinger with a soft spot; the brazen feminist "leader" trying to be taken seriously; the prostitute that is just really looking for true love (but wont admit it); the shady gangster who fronts as a legitimate business man; lady MacBeth; emo teenagers filled with hormones and angst being manipulated by their parents; the self-made founder of the town who owns everything--a take on John Wayne's McClintock minus the playful drunkenness; the crazy girl with a mysterious past that seems to have some magical powers; and the illustrious leader who is really working for the enemy.

Its like someone crammed the setting of Firefly, with the lame costuming from Star Trek, sprinkled in a little bit of BSG faux drama, and capped it off with bad CGI.

I tried it and didn't like it. There is nothing new or original here to keep my attention. I am not invested in any of the characters or the plotlines. Your mileage may vary.
